Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Fiction Prior to 1860: An Attempt at a First-Hand Bibliography: A Dissertation, Presented to the Faculty of the University of Virginia as a Part of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In every instance I have done all in my power to get back to the sources - the novels themselves in the first editions. I assume no responsibility for the correctness of the titles and dates of books I have not seen. But little confidence can be placed in the dates and titles as given by various encyclopedias and books on American literature. This is especially true of books written on Southern literature by Southern authors in recent years. Most of these I have found absolutely worthless when accuracy is at stake. Two notable exceptions are the Life of Simms, by W. P. Trent, and the Virginia Edition of Poe, by Dr. James A. Harrison. These two gentlemen have made every effort to reach first-hand results. Nothing has been added to the results reached by Dr. Harrison, and no errors have been discovered in his dates or titles. As to the matter included herein, the lines have not been drawn at the novel alone; but novels, tales, tragedy, comedy, short stories in prose and verse, and metrical romances have been included. No account is taken of books written in foreign languages, but a few translations have been listed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Southern Poetry Prior to 1860 The essays of Thomas Nelson Page in his volume on The Old South have been suggestive and helpful, especially the one on Authorship in the South before the War. Professor William P. Trent's William Gilmore Simms (american Men of Letters Series) is an admirable study, in many ways, of ante-bellum literary and political conditions in the South, though Professor Trent's point of view is often not that of the representative Southerner. Both of these works deal with the general literary conditions that prevailed, and ac count for the fact that the amount of pure literature produced in the South was not greater. The best collection of American poetry in existence is with out doubt the Harris Collection in the library of Brown University. Two catalogues of this. Have been published one prepared in 1874 by Mr. C. Fiske Harris, the original owner, and the other in 1886 by Mr. John C. Stockbridge. The latter is fuller in bibliographical details, but omits many titles, particularly of Southern poetry, included by Mr. Harris. Both of these we have freely used in the preparation of a bibliography. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bethany a Story of the Old South

Download or read book Bethany a Story of the Old South written by Thomas Watson and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN the effort to show the state of opinion and of feeling in the South immediately prior to the Civil War,the author let the historical characters speak for themselves. Into the mouths of Toombs, Stephens, Johnston, and others he have put their real sentiments, though he have seldom used their own words. The entire first part of Bethany is devoted to the conditions existing from 1856 to 1861. The author thought it best not to mix personal narrative with these tremendous political issues and movements. In the second part of the book, no effort has been made to manufacture an intricate plot and to work it out to a happy conclusion. In order to make a true picture of the times and the people, the author let what actually happened appear in the book as it happened. It is only in conventional novels that lovers invariably reach sunshine and-marriage. In real life, they are too often lost in the mists, and go their separate ways in the dark. The story itself is simply that of a young Confederate Volunteer who met death in the service- having loved and lost a Southern girl of rare promise and beauty. The book is frankly Southern in tone, but not offensively so. If it contains a single bitter paragraph, it is there by inadvertence. Mr. Watson states in his Preface, "When it shall have gradually dawned upon all Northern writers that the Southern States in 1860 did no more than exercise a right which had been almost universally conceded from the founding of the Government-a right in which the seceders believed, and which the provocation seemed to call for the use of-then, perhaps, we shall have historical literature which does not stigmatize us as rebels and our leaders as traitors. Not till that time comes will there be the complete reconciliation which should be the supreme desire of all patriots."
