Download or read book Southern Campus 1935 Classic Reprint written by University Of California and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-29 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Campus, 1935 There IS a certain sort of fun in pitting mental skill against a knotty problem in mathematics or philosophy; but there is a different sort of pleasure, a happiness that is really an art - the art of enjoying life and the people about one. This art of happiness is a valuable asset in one's per sonal life; moreover, it is well worth definite study in these days when social relationships within human society are being recognized as constituting one of our most serious problems. Perhaps recreation will be one of the most helpful keys to its solution. Recreation contributes to society's needs in forms to match those needs. Students, for example, are - presumably - engaged primarily in intellectual pursuits, and the strain therefore falls mainly on the nervous rather than the muscu lar mechanism. Active physical effort is thus indicated as an essential of their recreation programs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quad, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Review of Student Thinking at Birmingham-Southern College; August, 1942 So it is in sympathy with these aims and with the offering of a humble voice for their promotion that I come back when the editors of Quad tell me that a contribution will be accepted. Those of us who are young live for the future. Somewhere in the years before we entered college we began to realize the inadequacy of childhood and the things it meant and held for us. That realization was accompanied by several sorts of objections to leaving a state of existence that was for the most part comfortable and secure, but most of us, when we finally knew that there was no going back, became at first inordinately eager to get on with the life of an adult being. And along with that eagerness to go ahead came the shocking knowledge that discomfort and insecurity were the major characteristics of this new life. We are seized with an impatience, and most of the time we are forgetful of the moments of happiness and the areas of comfort that make the apparent chaos more than bearable and even challenging. That impatience manifests itself sometimes in such disrespect for the older people who are running things that it would have to be called utter rudeness were not ignor ance and lack of experience its cause. Of course, sometimes the older people are guilty of most of what impetuous youth accuses it. The young men now face the lonely and poisonous sands of the Solomons, the young men who are thrown into the burning hell around torpedoed tankers, the young men stung to death with a white hot incendiary at a bleak feet, the young violinist breaking his precious hands pushing a jeep out of mud - are they merely rude when they ask, if they ask, Why didn't you make some decent arrangement in 1919? Why did you return to a farm in Tennessee, a suburban home in Westchester, with your back to a Europe still cancerous? Why did you buy the automobiles, the radios, drink Scotch whiskey in speakeasies - the fruits of an economy temporarily pegged to lending a hurt and desperate Germany money to rearm? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bowdoin College Bulletin: President's Report Number; Sessions of 1942-43 Except to those whose memories of the College go back to the Student Army Training Corps of the fall of 1918, it is a strange sight to see squadrons of young men march to class and to the Union for meals; it is strange to hear in place of the rising bell the bugles reveille at it is strange and thrilling every eve ning to have retreat held by the Memorial Flag Pole. And while students still stroll to classes in desultory friendly groups and while the Army marches, young Naval officers very busi ness-like go their way to class and laboratory. Classes begin at 8 and last until 12 noon, which is now the chapel hour; andiin the afternoon there are classes, laboratory periods, and instruc tion in physical training from to Every student is required to take five hours a week of physical training; and men in the service have already written of its value. The gymnasium, the cage, the swimming pool, are actually in use from early morning to late at night. This may be symbolic of what war really means when one goes from the silent library with only a few students to the crowded gym. Old grads returning to the campus for an hour or two shake their heads and say sadly, It doesnt look like the college to me. But they have not locked deep enough to realize it is the same college serving its country in different ways. The punctuation marks of the next half century are now all at hand. The Bah! Humbug! Mood is not far away as some Americans face the post-war status of women. They say in effect that of course dur ing war time women have their uses, but when the war is won women will of course settle back into more or less innocuous desuetude. Why w o r r y about their education? As for main taining it now how silly! \ve are at war and education is a useless luxury. It is my impression that the hum bug attitude is even more out of date now than it was in the 1870's. There is of course some precedent for taking pre-war parities as a standard of mod ern adjustment. But it is my sincere hope that we will not move to a pre Civil War basis in establishing post global war standards for education.
