Book excerpt: 00 California's coastal zones are areas of extreme vulnerability, subject to the vicissitudes of weather and prone to erosion, landslides, and flooding. Gerald Kuhn and Francis Shepard examine and analyze these threats to coastal stability in a thought-provoking and detailed study of the coastal area of San Diego County from the nineteenth century to the present. An invaluable resource for oceanographers, geologists, meteorologists, coastal engineers, property owners, developers, and planning and regulatory agencies. Book Living with the Changing California Coast

Download or read book Living with the Changing California Coast written by Gary B. Griggs and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of The Changing California Coast is to provide perspective on the realities of living on the California coast, its challenges and issues, and the nitty gritty of what to consider before buying or building a house. The book achieves this aim by providing a tutorial on the potential hazards of coastal living, and systematically covering the coast from border to border. A must read for anyone whose idea of the coast is based on too many episodes of Baywatch."--Paul D. Komar, author of Beach Processes and Sedimentation "California's coast is a living landscape endlessly besieged by waves and tides, upland erosion, seismic forces, and human efforts to secure land's edge in place. A geography of awesome beauty and constant conflict, the coast is where people want to be. Living with the Changing California Coast is a must read for property owners, developers, investors, public officials, and activists who care about our coast's future. This book lays out the consequences of our tendency to wall up the coast and what we might do to reverse the trend. A most thorough, alarming and compelling tale of what is happening to our shoreline. Will policy makers listen?"--Peter Douglas, Executive Director of the California Coastal Commission

Book Winter Storm Damage Along the California Coast 1977 1978

Download or read book Winter Storm Damage Along the California Coast 1977 1978 written by George W. Domurat and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California experienced significant coastal damage during the winter of January and February 1978. A combination of high astronomical tides, strong onshore winds, high storm waves, and excessive rainfall produced an aggravated erosional condition. This report documents the causes and results of the dynamic conditions which led to the storm damage along the California coastline. Also included, as an appendix, is a section of a report by the California Coastal Commission summarizing the cost analysis of damage along coastal California. (Author).

Book Coastal Processes Study of the Oceanside California Littoral Cell

Download or read book Coastal Processes Study of the Oceanside California Littoral Cell written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistent and devastating erosion of the beaches south of the Oceanside, California, Harbor and Del Mar Boat Basin, with an accompanying accretion of sand in the harbor and entrance channel, has been a continuing critical problem since the construction of the Del Mar Boat Basin and the protective breakwaters. In order to eliminate these problems, certain engineering works of improvement have been proposed, among which are additional breakwater systems, beach fill, and sand by-passing procedures. Congress has accepted Federal responsibility for erosion control at Oceanside, based on the opinion that the longshore littoral transport of material in the surf zone has a net southerly direction. Because of conflicting conclusions regarding both the volume and direction of transport, the U.S. Army Engineer District, Los Angeles, requested that the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) perform an independent analysis using the latest ocean wave statistical data as input to ascertain quantitatively the rate of longshore transport in this region. It was determined that approximately 800,000 cu yd gross, 1,200,000 cu yd gross, and 1,900,000 cu yd gross of material are moving at Las Flores, Oceanside, and Encinitas, respectively, on an annual average basis. Also, an estimated 100,000 cu yd net of littoral material is moving southerly past Oceanside, California, on an annual average basis, with the net volume increasing in a southerly direction south of the vicinity of Oceanside.
