Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 Africa Agriculture Trade Monitor, the third in this series of flagship reports, presents an overview of trade in agriculture products in Africa and highlights the main impediments that affect intra- and extra-African trade. This year’s report includes chapters focusing on intra-Africa trade integration for agricultural products, including the role of nontariff measures, and on the competitiveness of African value chains that are crucial for food security (cereals, sugar, vegetable oils). The importance and measurement of informal cross-border trade for agricultural products is also examined. The final chapter looks at regional integration experiences in Southern Africa, with a focus on the Southern Africa Development Community. The report offers policy recommendations for improving agricultural exports performance, especially in the context of the unprecedented uncertainty the world is facing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Book Agricultural Trade and Food Security

Download or read book Agricultural Trade and Food Security written by Kevin Watkins and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 1995 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a $16,000 subsidy per farmer in the USA translate into food insecurity for households in Cagayan Valley in the Philippines? How does a few percentage points rise in grain demand in South Korea drive up meat prices in the wet market of Valencia in Cotabato in the Philippines? This book takes us through the interaction of international trade realities and national policies, and how they impact on the survival strategies of even remote households and villages. Knowing and understanding such links raise larger and pressing considerations for development work in many communities. The need for a wider range of tools of analysis and intervention, especially in the field of economics and in macroeconomic policy-making is upon us. This book will attempt to contribute to filling that need, and, hopefully contribute also to efforts at bringing micro development concerns into macro development programmes and policies.

  • Pages : 387 pages

Download or read book Pricing Irrigation Water written by Yacov Tsur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As globalization links economies, the value of a country's irrigation water becomes increasingly sensitive to competitive forces in world markets. Water policy at the national and regional levels will need to accommodate these forces or water is likely to become undervalued. The inefficient use of this resource will lessen a country's comparative advantage in world markets and slow its transition to higher incomes, particularly in rural households. While professionals widely agree on what constitutes sound water resource management, they have not yet reached a consensus on the best ways of implementing policies. Policymakers have considered pricing water - a debated intervention - in many variations. Setting the price 'right,' some say, may guide different types of users in efficient water use by sending a signal about the value of this resource. Aside from efficiency, itself an important policy objective, equity, accessibility, and implementation costs associated with the right pricing must be considered. Focusing on the examples of China, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, and Turkey, Pricing Irrigation Water provides a clear methodology for studying farm-level demand for irrigation water. This book is the first to link the macroeconomics of policies affecting trade to the microeconomics of water demand for irrigation and, in the case of Morocco, to link these forces to the creation of a water user-rights market. This type of market reform, the contributors argue, will result in growing economic benefits to both rural and urban households.
