Download or read book Southern African Futures written by Bertil Odén and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of apartheid in South Africa and post-cold war international development changed the preconditions for regionalization in southern Africa. From being used as an instrument in the overlaying conflict between apartheid South Africa and the rest of the region, it can now be constructively used to improve regional development. This study examines a number of decisive factors for future southern African regionalization. One of its conclusions is that the process will mainly be spontaneous, rather than politically guided. Functional integration in sectors like hydropower, water management, transport, and communication is easier to envisage than traditional trade integration. Investments rather than trade will be the driving force. Threats to the three main interrelated components of a positive scenario for the region -- high economic growth, political stability, and absence of major armed conflicts between and within the countries -- are analyzed. The risk that regionalization by default may lead to enclaves of growth and wealth in a sea of poverty is noted.

Download or read book Regional Development in Africa written by Norbert Edomah and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional development is a broad term but can be seen as a general effort to reduce regional disparities by supporting (employment and wealth-generating) economic activities in regions. In the past, regional development policy tended to try to achieve these objectives by means of large-scale infrastructure development and by attracting inward investment” (OECD, 2014).A territorial and regional approach to development is crucial in addressing regional challenges, regional economic competitiveness, and reducing socio-economic discrepancies. This book provides a forum to articulate and discuss Africa’s regional development issues in view of the rising opportunities within the African region. This volume contains 14 chapters and is organized in four sections: Introduction; Industry, Trade and Investment in Africa; Agricultural Services and the Water-energy-food Nexus in Africa; and Environmental and Cultural Dimensions to Africa’s Regional Development.

Download or read book Structural Stability in an African Context written by Robert Kappel and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Stability is a particular focus for reconceptualizing developmental strategy and development aid and has provoked unfore-seen responses in the course of a recent, mainly German debate. This debate began late in 2000 when a number of prominent German scholars in African Studies initiated a policy dialogue through a widely circulated and publicly discussed "Afrika Memorandum" centred on the notion of structural stability. Its arguments are relevant not only to a German audience but offer stimulating and thought-provoking inputs into the debate in the wider European context on bilateral and multilateral relations with Africa. This Discussion Paper presents the revised contributions to a Consultative Workshop on Structural Stability in an African Context that took place at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala on 31 March and 1 April 2003.

Download or read book Land Reform Under Structural Adjustment in Zimbabwe written by Sam Moyo and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents a first systematic effort to document Zimbabwe "s new land uses during the years of economic crisis, the role of the state in promoting them, the differentiation associated with them, not only between black and white farmers, but also among them, and the implications of all these for the political economy of the Zimbabwean land question. The fact that some of the new land uses avoid redistribution of clearly under-utilised large scale commercial farms suggests that the Zimbabwean land question will remain a live political issue for a long time.

Download or read book Bushmen and Diamonds written by Kenneth Good and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Botswana's democracy is often considered to be a comparatively advanced and positive example of an African state in terms of political culture and the notion of 'good governance'. This paper challenges the assumption that the country's current political and socio-economic system is, in fact, exemplary. It highlights some of the limitations by focusing on the particular situation of the Bushmen/San as a marginalized minority denied citizens' rights and losing out against the material interests accompanying the exploration and exploitation of diamonds, the most lucrative natural resource contributing to Botswana's 'success story'.The author has on previous occasions presented and published related analyses within the research network on 'Liberation and Democracy in Southern Africa' (LiDeSA), which is currently coordinated through the Nordic Africa Institute. This publication is another result of the collaboration within this project.
