Book Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism

Download or read book Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism written by Bill Faulkner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism examines management responses to the major changes taking place in international tourism and considers tourism itself as an agent of change. Including twenty-two detailed case studies from around the world this book explores two key principles. Firstly that change is enevitable and, if effectively managed, has the potential to benefit all those living in, working in and visiting the destination. Secondly, that there are no universal prescriptions for the effective management of change in tourism, since each destination has distinguishing characteristics and the nature of the problems facing it change over time.

Book Sanctions and Honorary Whites

Download or read book Sanctions and Honorary Whites written by Masako Osada and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-02-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study critically examines for the first time the unlikely friendship between apartheid South Africa and non-white Japan. In the mid-1980s, Japan became South Africa's largest trading partner, while South Africa purportedly treated Japanese citizens in the Republic as honorary whites under apartheid. Osada probes the very different foreign policy-making mechanisms of the two nations and analyzes their ambivalent bilateral relations against the background of postcolonial and Cold War politics. She concludes that these diplomatic policies were adopted not voluntarily or willingly, but out of necessity due to external circumstances and international pressure. Why did Japan exercise sanctions against South Africa in spite of their strong economic ties? How effective were these sanctions? What did the sensational term honorary whites actually mean? When and how did this special treatment begin? How did South Africa get away with apparently treating the Japanese as whites but not Chinese, other Coloureds, Indians, and so forth? By using Japan's sanctions against South Africa and South Africa's honorary white treatment of the Japanese as key concepts, the author describes the development of bilateral relations during this unique era. The book also covers the fascinating historical interaction between the two countries from the mid-17th century onward.

Book Africa

This picture is set firmly within the frame of the continent’s geography. From a general synthesis, the books moves to a country by country analysis of the interdependence of geography and economic development. The authors’ analysis of the effects of varied development strategies in Africa leads them, in the final section, to discuss what lessons maybe learned from these earlier initiatives and to assess the changes in development policies that were later implemented. This book will be of interest to students of geography, economics and development studies.

Book Southern Africa s Blue Economy

Download or read book Southern Africa s Blue Economy written by Donald L. Sparks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa’s maritime interests are considerable: its oceans and ports are essential to the wealth of the region, are crucial for trade and are an important source of employment, food and energy. However, regional governments do not place sufficient attention on the Blue Economy and its potential to stimulate economic growth. Of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, goal Number 14 (Life Below Water) is the least funded. Less than 1% of Official Development Assistance goes toward this goal, and even private investment and funding from philanthropic organizations is grossly inadequate to meet Africa’s blue economy needs. It is vital for the international community to face up to the challenges of Africa’s Blue Economy and start working on solutions and for southern Africa’s Blue Economy policies and goals to be expanded. Just as sustainable development green initiatives show promise, so too could Blue Economy projects and activities. Southern Africa’s rich coastal and marine resources need to be managed on both a national and regional level if they are to be used in a long-term, sustainable way. This book provides, for the first time, a concise study of the constraints and opportunities that the Blue Economy offers for southern Africa and the role that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) could play in fostering a sustainable use of its ocean and coastal resources.

Book Sport in the African World

Download or read book Sport in the African World written by John Nauright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport has been a component of African cultural life for several hundred years. In today’s globalized world, Africans and Africa have become a vital part of the international sporting landscape. This is the first book to attempt to survey the historical, contemporary and geographical breadth of that landscape, drawing on multidisciplinary scholarship from around the world. To gain an understanding of sport in Africa and its contributions to the global sports world, one must first consider the ways in which sport itself is a terrain of conflict and represents another symbolic territory to conquer. Addressing key themes such as colonialism, globalization, migration, apartheid, politics and international relations, sports media and broadcasting, ethnobranding, sports tourism and the African diaspora in Europe and the United States, this collection of original scholarship offers a significant contribution to this burgeoning field of research. Sport in the African World is fascinating reading for all students and scholars with an interest in sport studies, sport history, African history or African culture.
