Download or read book Parliament the Budget and Poverty in South Africa A Shift in Power written by Len Verwey and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective and transparent government budgeting is vital to any democracy. In South Africa, massive poverty, inequality and unemployment remain, despite the successful political transformation, citizens and Parliament have a particularly important role to play in shaping budget policy and overseeing its implementation. South Africa reached a crossroads in fiscal governance when it passed the Money Bills Amendment Act in 2009, a law which granted Parliament strong powers to amend the budget prepared by the executive. This publication explores the content of the new law as well as the challenges and opportunities arising from it. It also discusses the role of Parliament in ensuring pro-poor budgeting. Good fiscal governance is too important for the wellbeing of South Africans to not be a part of our public conversations.

Book Demilitarisation and Peace Building in Southern Africa

Download or read book Demilitarisation and Peace Building in Southern Africa written by Peter Batchelor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2004 , this work is based on a collaborative research project, this trilogy considers the dynamics of demilitarisation and peace-building in southern Africa in the aftermath of major violent conflicts. The overall aim of the research is to support and facilitate the achievement of sustainable peace and human development in southern Africa, by analysing demilitarisation and peace-building processes in the region and identifying policy options and interventions for peace-building. The central focus of the research is the extent to which demilitarisation following the termination of wars has contributed to broad processes of peace-building in the affected region. Has the military in southern Africa downsized and refocused towards new roles? Has there been a 'peace-dividend', allowing more investment in economic and human development, thereby dealing with some of the root causes of conflict? Volume I provides a conceptual framework for the analysis of demilitarisation and peace-building processes, applicable particularly in the southern Africa context. This volume argues that a broad concept of peace-building has to take into account economic, political, social and cultural factors, at the local, national and regional level.

Download or read book The Report South Africa 2013 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rainbow Nation benefits from an internationally competitive private sector, which accounts for roughly 70% of GDP, and extremely competitive infrastructure; its utility sector, for example, produces just under half of the total power generated on the African continent. South Africa represents by far the most developed market in Africa, but there are still some structural challenges it is grappling with. Government strategies have set a target of increasing labour market participation from 54% in 2010 to 65% by 2030, bringing the number of workers in the formal sector to 25.3m people and lowering unemployment from 25% to 6%. While its fiscal space is narrow, long-term investments in infrastructure, education and health are expected to be key to attaining its growth potential. Recent years have seen both the public and private sectors look to strengthen regulatory frameworks in mining and industry – in some cases, like the automotive sector, with impressive results.
