Book excerpt: Snorkel surveys have been conducted annually since 1997 to monitor the spawning abundance of steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss in 10 index streams in SEAK, and were conducted again during 2012 and 2013. These index streams were surveyed by a 2- or 3-person team using snorkel gear between mid-April and early June. Snorkel surveyors observed peak counts (counts bracketed by lower counts) in 8 of the index streams during 2012, and 7 during 2013. The 2012 counts show a slight decrease in numbers from the recent high years, however in 2013 there was a slight increase.

Book excerpt: Snorkel surveys were conducted in 2014 and 2015 to enumerate adult steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss within 10 index streams across Southeast Alaska. This is a continuation of a long-term project that began in 1997 to monitor region wide trends in the spawning abundance of steelhead within Southeast Alaska. Snorkel surveys were conducted between mid-April and late May during expected peak inriver abundance. A total of 27 surveys were conducted in 2014 and 30 in 2015. Peak survey counts (counts bracketed between lower counts) were successfully achieved in 6 index streams during 2014, and 6 index streams during 2015. Survey counts across index streams were collectively used to calculate the regional abundance index, which indicated abundance in 2014 and 2015 was slightly lower but very near the long-term average. Water temperature was monitored in index streams during 2014 and 2015.
