The book also walks readers to look into the events that had made it possible for traditional South Sudanese communities to get involved in the conflict, particularly, the role of traditional civil defense groups (White Army, Mathiang Anyor, Aguelwek, Arrow boys, etc).Hoth Giw Chan, was born in Jiokow town, South Sudan, along the Ethiopian border. He obtained his Bachelor Degree (BA) from Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa), Masters Degree (MPA) from Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa), and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University Of Massachusetts School Of Law (Dartmouth, Massachussetts). He was an adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island College, before moving to South Sudan, where he held various positions, including working with the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission, before the war. He also work as an Attorney/Lawyer at Chan & Zuor Law Firm in Juba, South Sudan. Hoth, is a survivor of the December 2013, Nuer genocide in Juba, by the South Sudanese government. Hoth Giw Chan, is a co-author of a book entitled "South Sudan: A Legitimate Struggle (2006)."

Book excerpt: The civil war that has intermittently raged in the Sudan since independence in 1956 is, according to Francis Deng, a conflict of contrasting and seemingly incompatible identities in the Northern and Southern parts of the country. Identity is seen as a function of how people identify themselves and are identified in racial, ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious terms. The identity question related to how such concepts determine or influence participation and distribution in the political, economic, social, and cultural life of the country. War of Visions aims at shedding light on the anomalies of the identity conflict. The competing models in the Sudan are the Arab-Islamic mold of the North, representing two-thirds of the country in territory and population, and the remaining Southern third, which is indigenously African in race, ethnicity, culture, and religion, with an educated Christianized elite. But although the North is popularly defined as racially Arab, the people are a hybrid of Arab and African elements, with the African physical characteristics predominating in most tribal groups. This configuration is the result of a historical process that stratified races, cultures, and religions, and fostered a "passing" into the Arab-Islamic mold that discriminated against the African race and cultures. The outcome of this process is a polarization that is based more on myth than on the realities of the situation. The identity crisis has been further complicated by the fact that Northerners want to fashion the country on the basis of their Arab- Islamic identity, while the South is decidedly resistant. Francis Deng presents three alternative approaches to the identity crisis. First, he argues that by bringing to the surface the realities of the African elements of identity in the North-- thereby revealing characteristics shared by all Sudanese--a new basis for the creation of a common identity could be established that fosters equitable

USAID, UNICEF, UNESCO, and the UN's strategies for rebuilding the nation through educational programs are all evaluated in this thesis. Ernest Gellner's theory on nationalism, local news articles, and official government reports on the progression of education in South Sudan and its identity, including various other theorists on national identity will serve as the methodology used. The objective of this research is to shed light on the current situation in South Sudan, and to create possible solutions and understanding as to why it is so important that South Sudan not only educate its people, but bring its people together through an official national identity that does not clash with South Sudan's current tribal society. Without an established national identity, the country will be in a constant state of conflict. If the people of South Sudan do not address its problems of the past, its history of ethnic-targeted violence and genocide, then the country will have ongoing internal civil war. Establishing a national identity in South Sudan is the key to its own survival. It can be argued that the best strategy to enforce this national identity is in the classroom and through educational programs. An identity is about a sense of self, and answers the question of "who am I?" If the South Sudanese people cannot come together and find common ground on what makes them the same, instead of what separates them, then the country will stay divided, stay in a state of conflict, and will never rebuild. A country that is divided cannot prosper".

It is based off of a study conducted between June and July of 2015 among a sample of 75 respondents in Juba, South Sudan. The paper focuses on the analysis of our outcomes and uses a historical lens to identify particular events and projects that may have contributed to differences of sentiments across demographics. It is found that although there are significant patterns of variation in identification among demographics, the concept of national identity remains strong. Due to significant limitations, the findings in this study should be considered preliminary. However, they should help to re-inform and update parochial discourses of ethnic attachment in South Sudan, and should add to larger discourses of national-identity and the nation state in many sub-Saharan African countries.

In Somaliland and South Sudan, rearranging the state requires a complete metamorphosis of state institutions so that they respond to the needs and interests of the people. In Sudan and Somalia, the reconfiguration of the remains of the state must address a new reality and demands on the ground. All four cases examined, although highly variable, involve conflict. Conflict defines the scope, depth and momentum of the state building and state reconstruction process. It also determines the contours and parameters of the projects to reconstitute national identity and rebuild a nation. Addressing the contested identity formation and its direct relation to state building would therefore go a long way in mitigating conflicts and state crisis.
