Far from being wild, the Bow is now very much a human product: its fish are as manufactured as its altered flow, changed water quality, and newly stabilized and forested banks. The River Returns brings the story of the Bow River's transformation full circle through an exploration of the recent revolution in environmental thinking and regulation that has led to new limits on what might be done with and to the river. Book excerpt: The South Saskatchewan River is the most reliable supply of good quality water in the southern half of the province. However, Alberta also uses the resources of the river extensively for irrigation. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan had plans to develop more irrigated land and Saskatchewan also had development plans for recreational use, leading to concerns over the adequacy of the resource. The Canada-South Saskatchewan River Basin study was undertaken to provide information to guide water management and to help ensure that the water resources of the basin can meet the needs of existing and future users. This technical appendix to the report summarizes the water quality of the water resources of the Saskatchewan portion of the river basin. It identifies the water quality issues in the basin; evaluates existing water quality data bases; fills information gaps; establishes basin-specific water quality objectives for specific uses; and recommends a monitoring plan for the basin. Background information on the study and the water resources of the study area are also included.
