Book excerpt: EDITION 12 FOR 2016 SAILING DIRECTIONS PUB 120 (PLANNING GUIDE) PACIFIC OCEAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIA. SAILING DIRECTIONS PACIFIC OCEAN. PLANNING GUIDE. PACIFIC OCEAN PILOT. Original text by the USA NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. The surface waters of the Pacific are driven east to west by trade winds to form the North and South Equatorial currents. The North Equatorial Current has its axis approximately on the parallel of 15 N., and the South Equatorial Current generally follows the Equator. Between the two is the Equatorial Countercurrent flowing eastward. The South Pacific Ocean is generally warmer and less subject to wide variability in temperature. The lack of land also allows low pressure systems to travel a nearly circumpolar route S of 40 S. Lows forming to the N also move SE toward this belt. This is an area of year round clouds, precipitation, and strong winds. In the Southern Hemisphere, lows have a clockwise circulation, while high pressure systems have a counterclockwise circulation. To the N of the "roaring 40's" lies a large semi-permanent high which varies only slightly from winter to summer. It is centered closest to the Equator (30 S) in summer.... ..... Thunderstorms are more likely in the W islands than in the E part. They occur on up to 22 days annually at Koror and on about 10 days .."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this devastating exposé, investigative journalist Jon Mitchell reveals the shocking toxic contamination of the Pacific Ocean and millions of victims by the US military. For decades, US military operations have been contaminating the Pacific region with toxic substances, including plutonium, dioxin, and VX nerve agent. Hundreds of thousands of service members, their families, and residents have been exposed—but the United States has hidden the damage and refused to help victims. After World War II, the United States granted immunity to Japanese military scientists in exchange for their data on biological weapons tests conducted in China; in the following years, nuclear detonations in the Pacific obliterated entire islands and exposed Americans, Marshallese, Chamorros, and Japanese fishing crews to radioactive fallout. At the same time, the United States experimented with biological weapons on Okinawa and stockpiled the island with nuclear and chemical munitions, causing numerous accidents. Meanwhile, the CIA orchestrated a campaign to introduce nuclear power to Japan—the folly of which became horrifyingly clear in the 2011 meltdowns in Fukushima Prefecture. Caught in a geopolitical grey zone, US territories have been among the worst affected by military contamination, including Guam, Saipan, and Johnston Island, the final disposal site of apocalyptic volumes of chemical weapons and Agent Orange. Accompanying this damage, US authorities have waged a campaign of cover-ups, lies, and attacks on the media, which the author has experienced firsthand in the form of military surveillance and attempts by the State Department to impede his work. Now, for the first time, this explosive book reveals the horrific extent of contamination in the Pacific and the lengths the Pentagon will go to conceal it.

Book Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific

Download or read book Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific written by John E. Randall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pacific has long been in need of a comprehensive guide to reef and shore fishes. This volume covers the inshore fish fauna of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, the southern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Tuvalu, Fiji, the Wallis Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, the Tokelau Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, the Society Islands, the Tuamoto Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. It contains accounts of nearly 1,500 species of fishes, illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, taken mostly underwater. (A few drab species are illustrated by only black and white photographs or drawings.) Species accounts are headed by the English common name, the scientific name, the author or authors who described the fish, and the date of the description. This is followed by a concise list of the characteristics needed to identify the species, the total length it attains, its distribution, habitat, and in summary form what may be known of its biology. More than 600 references are given for those seeking more information on individual species. The introduction contains a two-page color spread of the main external features of fishes. An extensive glossary of scientific terms precedes the index.
