These visions as repeated to us, resemble the Simulacra of the ancient Romans. The wraith called the " Double," is in effect a dual image of one's self or of another person still living, which, when it appears, is supposed to be predictive of the near-coming death of the person whose shadow is thus projected from out that spirit land he is so soon destined finally to enter. In other words, the appearance of the " Double " is regarded as a premonition of death.... Henry C., a respectable man, told us that, when a boy of ten years of age, he saw one of these visionary likenesses, --the Doppelganger of the Germans. He shared the same bed with his father's brother, Christopher, and one day he awoke and saw in the early gray of the morning, standing near the bed, a figure whom he supposed to be his uncle. But at the same moment, also noticing that his uncle was beside him in the bed, he became greatly frightened. Christopher then spoke to his little nephew very calmly, telling him not to be afraid, --and as he spoke the shadow vanished. The man then rose, dressed himself, and went down-stairs, where meeting Henry's father, he said to him, " Brother, my double has come for me, and Henry also has seen it. I shall not be with you long in this world." After that he grew melancholy, could eat nothing, and lost strength, day by day. Being an old man, he did not long survive this enervation, and two weeks later died. Apropos of this dual vision, a man told us a very curious story of a ghost and its double. It seems that his father's house was very near a graveyard, and the children of the family had, on account of its vicinage, lost all sense of awe as connected with the graves. They found it quite convenient to join several...

Book excerpt: Robert E. Lee, after decisively repelling John Pope's August 1862 invasion of Virginia at the Second Battle of Manassas, took the offensive. Moving north into Maryland, Lee divided his forces to capture Harpers Ferry while continuing his advance further into Union territory. George B. McClellan, the new Union commander, learned that Lee had divided his forces, and advanced to attack the Confederates. The armies, from squad to corps level, fought hard in both cavalry and infantry actions for control of the three gaps across South Mountain, about sixty miles from the Federal capital. The victory McClellan's officers and men gave him forced Lee to fall back and regroup near the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, thus setting the stage for the Civil War's bloodiest day which soon followed at Antietam Creek. Three days before that September day, the opposing armies fought a series of engagements that came to be known as the Battle of South Mountain. Until Before Antietam those battles existed i
