Book excerpt: A picture book story about the triumph of hope, love, and determination, Coming to England is the inspiring true story of Baroness Floella Benjamin: from Trinidad, to London as part of the Windrush generation, to the House of Lords. When she was ten years old, Floella Benjamin, along with her older sister and two younger brothers, set sail from Trinidad to London, to be reunited with the rest of their family. Alone on a huge ship for two weeks, then tumbled into a cold and unfriendly London, coming to England wasn't at all what Floella had expected. Coming to England is both deeply personal and universally relevant – Floella's experiences of moving home and making friends will resonate with young children, who will be inspired by her trademark optimism and joy. This is a true story with a powerful message: that courage and determination can always overcome adversity.

Download or read book The History of the Drake Family and the Times They Lived written by Terry W. Drake and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history takes factual information provided by encyclopedias and other historical documents. Other reference material includes birth certificates, death certificates and census data which support the factual basis of this history. The war records and military history of individuals and their family members were also used in the determination of their contributions to the society in which they lived. Other research material included Wikipedia, Ancetry.com, wikitree.com, genealogy.com family bibles and my many brothers and sisters. Two directions of ancestry history were investigated to gain the most effective approach to the design of this history. First the genealogy of Amye Grenville was traced to her origin of Charlemagne. Her marriage to John Drake VI allowed further investigation into his ancestry. Both were thoroughly pursued with vigor to determine their origins over the last 1300 years. The investigation provided by Earl Drake combined with my efforts has provided this history for your enjoyment.

Download or read book Information Institutions and Local Government in England 1550 1700 written by Paul Griffiths and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between 1550 and 1700 saw significant changes in the nature and scope of local government: sophisticated information and intelligence systems were developed; magistrates came to rely more heavily on surveillance to inform 'good government'; and England's first nationwide system of incarceration was established within bridewells. But while these sizeable and lasting shifts have been well studied, less attention has been paid to the important characteristic that they shared: the 'turning inside' of the title. What was happening beneath this growth in activity was a shift from 'open' to 'closed' management of a host of problems—from the representation of authority itself to treatment of every kind of local disorder, from petty crime and poverty to dirty streets. Information, Institutions, and Local Government in England, 1550-1700 explores the character and consequences of these changes for the first time. Drawing on wide-ranging archival research in 34 archives, the book examines the ways in which the notion of representing authority and ethics in public (including punishment) was increasingly called into question in early modern England, and how and why local government officials were involved in this. This 'turning inside' was encouraged by insistence on precision and clarity in broad bodies of knowledge, culture, and practice that had lasting impacts on governance, as well as a range of broader demographic, social, and economic changes that led to deeper poverty, thinner resources, more movement, and imagined or real crime-waves. In so doing, and by drawing on a diverse range of examples, the book offers important new perspectives on local government, visual representation, penal cultures, institutions, incarceration, and surveillance in the early modern period.

Download or read book Lodgers Landlords and Landladies in Georgian London written by Gillian Williamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large proportion of London's population lived in lodgings during the long 18th century, many of whom recorded their experiences. In this fascinating study, Gillian Williamson examines these experiences, recorded in correspondences and autobiographies, to offer unseen insights into the social lives of Londoners in this period, and the practice of lodging in Georgian London. Williamson draws from an impressive array of sources, archives, newspapers, OBSP trials and literary representations to offer a thorough examination of lodging in London, to show how lodging and lodging houses sustained the economy of London during this time. Williamson offers a fascinating insight into the role lodging houses played as the facilitators of encounters and interactions, which offers an illuminating depiction of social relations beyond the family. The result is an important contribution to current historiography, of interest to historians of Britain in the long 18th century.
