Download or read book South Lyon written by Jennifer Redfern and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When settlers were moving west from Detroit into the unknowns of Michigan, they went six days to the northwest and came upon what would become Lyon Township. It is unknown who settled first in the southwest corner of the township, but when William Thompson, his mother, and his brothers acquired land, along with three corners of an Indian Trail, the area became known as Thompson's Corners. Later, the area was renamed South Lyon for the town's location in the township. Known for its rich farmland, it started to grow when the railroads came to town. This made South Lyon a booming town with a rich history--one that includes a "Witch's Hat" depot and a buffalo. A series of 200 images tells the community's story from its founding until the present day.

Download or read book The Archaeology of New York State written by William A. Ritchie and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete account of ancient man in the New York area ever published in one volume, this book traces a rich, 8000-year story of human prehistory. Beginning with the first known inhabitants, Paleo-Indian hunters who lived approximately 7000 B.C., the author gives a detailed chronological account of the complex of cultural units that have existed in the area, culminating in the Iroquois tribes encountered by the European colonists at the dawn of the seventeenth century. All of the major archaeological sites in the region are described in detail and representative artifacts from all the major cultural units are illustrated in over 100 plates and drawings. The entire account is informed by the most recently obtained radio-carbon dates. In addition to giving much new, previously unpublished information, the author has synthesized all earlier published material and from this he has drawn as many inferences as the material affords regarding the nature of these early inhabitants, where they came from, and how they lived. Each cultural unit is systematically described: its discovery and naming; its ecological and chronological setting; the physical characteristics of the related people; economy; housing and settlement pattern; dress and ornament; technology; transportation; trade relationships; warfare; esthetic and recreational activities; social and political organization; mortuary customs; and religio-magical and ceremonial customs.
Download or read book Albanians in Michigan written by Frances Trix and published by Discovering the Peoples of Mic. This book was released on 2001 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent influx of Albanian migrants into Michigan is a result of both the nationalist upheavals in the Balkan region as well as the breadth of opportunities that Michigan affords. The diversity of Michigan's people is reflected in the Albanian community itself, as Christians and Muslims strive to maintain religious, ethnic, and linguistic identities in their new communities. Frances Trix explores the ways in which Michigan's Albanian community has forged an unusual cohesiveness and unity, and thus has remained more traditional in its orientation than have large, immigrant Albanian communities in other parts of the United States. These characteristics make the Albanian experience in Michigan unique.

Download or read book My Boogie Board Ride to Denmark written by Tedd Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanging on to my boogie board the riptide swirled me around and relentlessly smashed me against the rocks and sucked me below the surface. I knew with in minutes, I was going to die. Then came a god given moment of elation, as I was snatched from the churning seas by a native of St. Croix Virgin Island as he risked his life to reach down and pull me out. My joy was soon shattered by the gut wrenching moment when I learned another man from Denmark had perished in his valiant attempt to rescue me. He swam to me earlier without hesitation but had disappeared in the riptide. The intense drama continues on the sharp edged lava rock cliff, as several people arrive to place themselves in harms way and finish the rescue of me literally by their finger tips.So now comes the face to face moment with being met at the base of the cliff by an amazing lady of elegance, strength, and compassion. This new widow from Denmark exhibited the grandeur of a forgiving Danish society, and their love for all mankind. This was the beginning of my boogie board ride to Denmark.

Download or read book Invincible Summers written by Robin Gaines and published by Elj Editions. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. INVINCIBLE SUMMERS explores the agony of family. The story begins with the death of Claudia Goodwin's father, and then plunges into the murkier emotional trouble that follows for years. Through the 1960s and 70s, the world around Claudia moves on. But her loss walks along with her. Gaines deftly manages that loss and the way it floats through time not shrinking but morphing, not fading but fusing to all of Claudia's experiences. As the chapters progress through two tumultuous decades, they show how parents fumble their own children, how siblings abandon one another, and how people become itinerant and self-destructive. This is no simplistic tale of self- discovery, nor is it a dirge. It is, in Claudia's own words, a restless search for nowhere fueled by moments of whimsy, humor, and hope. I am glad to have read Gaines's fine debut novel and look forward to her next."
