Book Modernity and Spirit Worship in India

Download or read book Modernity and Spirit Worship in India written by Miho Ishii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the entangled relations between people’s daily worship practices and their umwelt in South India. Focusing on the practices of spirit (būta) worship in the coastal area of Karnataka, it examines the relationship between people and deities. Based on extensive fieldwork, this book links important anthropological theories on personhood, perspectives, transactions, and gift-exchanges together with the Gestaltkreis theory of Viktor von Weizsäcker. First, it examines the relations between būta worship and land tenure, matriliny, and hierarchy in the society. It then explores the reflexive relationship between modern law and current practices based on conventional law, before examining new developments in būta worship with the rise of mega-industries and environmental movements. Furthermore, this book sheds light on the struggles and endeavours of the people who create and recreate their relations with the realm of sacred wildness, as well as the formations and transformations of the umwelt in perpetual social-political transition. Modernity and Spirit Worship in India will be of interest to academics in the field of anthropology, religious studies and the dynamics of religion, and South Asian Culture and Society.

Book Voices from the Periphery

Download or read book Voices from the Periphery written by Marine Carrin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India as elsewhere, peripheries have frequently been viewed through the eyes of the centre. This book aims at reversing the gaze, presenting the perspectives of low castes, tribes, or other subalterns in a way that amplifies their ability to voice their own concerns. This volume takes a multidimensional perspective, citing political, economic and cultural factors as expressions of the autonomous assertions of these groups. Questioning the exclusive definitions of the Brahmanical, folk and tribal elements, the articles bring together the empowering possibilities enabled by three recent theoretical developments: of anthropologies questioning the fringes of mainstream society in India; critically engaged histories from below, which problematize subaltern identities; and a conceptual emphasis on everyday ethnography as an arena for negotiations and transactions which contest wider networks of power and hegemony. This book will be useful to those in sociology, anthropology, politics, history, study of religions, minority studies, cultural studies and those interested in social development, and issues of marginality, tribes and subaltern identity.

Book Stranger at Home Teak Forests of Karnataka

Download or read book Stranger at Home Teak Forests of Karnataka written by Dipak Sarmah, IFS (Retd.) and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peninsular India is one among the few regions of the world harboring natural teak forests. Karnataka is one of the states in the region that was blessed with extensive teak forests. Due to centuries of heavy exploitation for the prized wood and large-scale artificial introduction of teak since more than a century, the pristine teak forests have shrunk rapidly, being now confined only to a few pockets, mostly in the protected areas. Natural teak has virtually become an endangered species. The book, Stranger at Home – Teak Forests of Karnataka, attempts at sharing some information about the extensive natural teak forests that existed in Karnataka in the distant past. It also dwells upon the history of the development of teak plantations in the state. For various reasons including policy changes, court directives, lack of adequate funds, manpower, etc., management of these plantations has been a challenging task. The impact of monoculture on the biodiversity of the natural forest had also come in for sharper scrutiny and severe criticism. All these developments have somewhat slowed down the activities related to the management of the plantations, at times bordering on inaction. The book discusses various aspects and challenges associated with the management of teak forests and plantations, suggesting ways and means to forge ahead in the context of overall forest conservation with a special focus on biodiversity conservation.
