A key premise explored is that despite the diversity of jurisdictions and catchments there are commonalities to a successful approach. The authors show that environmental and public health water quality criteria must be integrated with the economic and social goals of those affected, necessitating a 'twin-track' and holistic (cross-sector and discipline) approach of stakeholder engagement and sound scientific research. A final synthesis presents a set of principles for adaptive catchment management. This report was produced from information recorded over the life of the two programs and supplementary data collected specifically for this report. For most of the projects featured in pt. 2, interviews were undertaken with project managers to ascertain outcomes from projects. All of the project overviews featured in pt. 2 have been verified by the interviewee or appropriate project manager. Interview questions are included as Appendix A. Additionally, an online survey was distributed to 150 stakeholders to capture lessons learned from the two programs; these are recorded in pt. 3. Survey questions are included as Appendix B.
