Book The Domesday Geography of South East England

Download or read book The Domesday Geography of South East England written by H. C. Darby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Domesday Book has long been used as a source of information about legal and economic matters, but its bearing upon the geography of medieval England has been comparatively neglected. The extraction of geographical information involves problems of interpretation, since it necessitates an analysis into elements and their subsequent reconstruction on a geographical basis. But when this has been done new materials for making a general picture of the relative prosperity of different areas are available, as well as data for the comparative study of varying geographic and economic factors. The whole work, The Domesday Geography of England, will be in six volumes. In them different experts are to be allotted large distinct districts under Professor Darby's editorship. He will himself draw together all the threads, and write the concluding chapters of each volume and the whole of the concluding volume. The book will be fully illustrated by many maps, all specially drawn under the general editor's supervision. The volumes will be separately available, though the first contains some general introductory matter relevant to the whole work.

Book The South East from 1000 AD

Download or read book The South East from 1000 AD written by C. B. Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume dealing with the regional and local history of South East England, this covers the landcape and society of the modern counties of Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex and Greater London, south of the Thames from late Anglo-Saxon times to the present. The authors have tried to show the diversity that can be found within the region as well as common characteristics which illustrate the local peculiarities of the area. The works in the series offer a synthesis of both historical and archaeological work in local areas. Each region is covered in two linked but independent volumes, the first covering the period up to AD 1000 and necessarily relying on archaeological data, and the second bringing the story up to modern times. It aims to portray life as it was experienced by the majority of people of South Britain or England as it was to become. The authors look at the major historical events which have an impact on the reagion - wars, plagues, technological changes and socio-cultural trends amongst them - but they also stress the underlying continuity of rural and urban life.

Book An Historical Atlas of Kent

Download or read book An Historical Atlas of Kent written by Terence Lawson and published by History Press (SC). This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive new historical atlas, based on current research, fills a notable gap in the published histories of the county and will serve for many years as an important work of reference for the history of Kent. The 250 newly drawn and reader-friendly maps cover topics ranging from the earliest Stone-Age occupation to such modern developments as the growth of leisure industries. Virtually every aspect of Kent s history is clearly mapped and explained in this remarkable new work. Kent can probably claim to have more unique features in its history than most other counties, all fully reflected in this atlas. The Cathedral at Cantebury with its medieval shrine to St Thomas Becket requires the general subject of pilgrimage to be covered in detail; the Cinque Ports, the echoes of their ancient privileges still apparent by the early 19th century, are another Kentish phenomenon; Romney Marsh, although not quite the separate continent that some claim, is nevertheless well worthy of the detailed account of its medieval history; Kent s perennial role as a gateway is perfectly illustrated by the "Strangers" from the near Continent who settled widely in the 16th and 17th centuries. Kent s industrial history is dominated by the unique concentration of royal dockyards; while the story of Kent s coalfield, isolated from its cousins in the North and Midlands, is yet another remarkable chapter. Finally, being located between the capital and the shortest crossing to the Continent, Kent s relationship with London has been exceptionally close since medieval times and is a recurring theme in this atlas. Several topics not usually covered in county historical atlases are included, for example the introduction of public water and gas supplies in the 19th century, together with the expansion of banking services and the local press. Though Kent has seen much in its time, it has never before seen a book like this, which will be welcomed well beyond the Kentish borders."

Book excerpt: Essex - the witch hunting county - is especially rich in traditions, legends, dialect and stories that have been handed down through the ages. It is these traditions that are gathered together in this volume and whose origins and meanings are explored to create a sense of how the customs of the past have influenced the ways of the present. This fully illustrated study of folklore rediscovers those traditions that have either vanished, been ignored or hidden away. There are tales of dragons and warriors, literary folk and legendary folk, but always at the heart of Essex folklore are the traditional beliefs, stories, events and customs of the common people. Daily life itself contained numerous beliefs and maxims, omens and superstitions, as well as being full of music, dance and song.
