Download or read book Overturn Countermeasures for Vehicles written by Melvin L Myers and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the century-long emergence and battle to protect drivers and occupants of off-road and on-road vehicles from crush-related injuries from rollovers. Deaths and serious injuries have been associated with vehicle overturns that involve tractors, other motorized machinery, automobiles, and small vehicles. It took more than a century to attend to much of this epidemic of death and disabling injury that resulted from these overturns. This book argues that a key factor in this response was epidemiology that reported rollover-related deaths and engineering revisionism that moved responses from “blame the victim” to rollbars to prevent the deaths.

This book was released on 1995-04-18 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive new book, Agricultural Health and Safety, provides extensive coverage of issues arising in the interrelated fields of health, agriculture, and the environment. The significance of this book is a direct result of the increasing number of health and safety issues in agriculture and its associated industries. It contains sections written by experts, and includes papers presented at the Third International Symposium for Issues in Health, Agriculture and the Environment. Topics include lung disease in farmers, respiratory effects of long-term exposure to grain dust and air contaminants, respiratory hazards of pork producers, occupational asthma, allergic disorders in plant growers, allergic rhinitis in farmers, respiratory effects of inhaled endotoxins, organic dust toxic syndrome, cancer risks, hazards of pesticides, neurological risks, work-related accidents, prevention and safe practice, sustainable farming systems, and more. In all cases, the issues are broadly integrated with those of the environment. No other book presents such a broad perspective of the field.

Download or read book Harvest of Hazards written by Derek S. Oden and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming has always been a dangerous occupation. In the middle of the twentieth century, as farmers adopted a wide array of new technologies, from tractors to pesticides and fertilizers, the dangers became more acute. The economic pressures that agriculture faced in this period compounded the perils of these powerful new tools, as farmers struggled to stay profitable in the face of widespread consolidation. In this study of the farm safety movement in the Corn Belt, historian Derek Oden examines why agriculture was so dangerous and why improvements were so difficult to achieve. Because farmers were self-employed business owners whose employees were mainly family members; because they lived far from aid such as hospitals and fire stations; and because they had to manage such a diverse array of new technologies, they could not easily adopt the workplace safety and public health reforms designed for factories and urban settings. In response, beginning in the 1940s, farmers and a new breed of farm safety specialists relied upon an increasingly elaborate educational campaign to lessen injuries and illnesses on the farm. Several government, business, and nonprofit organizations—from the US Department of Agriculture to the National Safety Council and 4-H and the Future Farmers of America—worked together to publicize both the dangers of farming and the information farmers needed to stay safe while driving tractors, applying anhydrous ammonia, or repairing machinery. By the 1960s, however, the partnership began to break down, and by the 1970s the safety movement became increasingly contested as professional and policy divisions emerged. This groundbreaking study incorporates agriculture into the histories of occupational safety and public health.
