Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: July 1, 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee advanced across the Pennsylvania countryside toward the small town of Gettysburg--less than 90 miles from Washington, D.C.--on a collision course with the Union Army of the Potomac. In Lee's ranks were 5,000 South Carolina troops destined to play critical roles in the three days of fighting ahead. From generals to privates, the Palmetto State soldiers were hurled into the Civil War's most famous battle--hundreds were killed, wounded or later suffered as prisoners of war. The life-and-death stories of these South Carolinians are here woven together here with official wartime reports, previously unpublished letters, newspaper accounts, diaries and the author's personal observations from walking the battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Carolina contributed two brigades of infantry, two regiments of cavalry and several artillery batteries to the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863. Their veterans related accounts of heroism and fear, triumph and loss for the remainder of their lives. These are their stories. Gleaned from diaries, letters and newspaper articles written immediately after the great battle and throughout the balance of the lives of its veterans, these stories place the reader in the boots of the men who lived the experience. Included with the firsthand accounts are maps of the fields fought for by these sons of the Palmetto State and photographs of a number of the soldiers involved. Along with battle histories and the individual exploits of the brigades led by General Joseph Kershaw, General Wade Hampton and Colonel Abner Perrin are accounts of the artillery batteries from South Carolina and the improvised cavalry command assembled from scattered companies by Colonel John Logan Black, who had been left behind due to wounds from an earlier battle. Black was determined to rejoin the army as soon as he was able and caught up with General Robert E. Lee with two companies and other miscellaneous cavalrymen who had been separated from their regiments. His improvised command participated in all three days of the battle before rejoining Hampton's Brigade. Also covered are the annual reunions where the old soldiers gathered to camp once again on the fields of Gettysburg. The veterans recount many tales of reconnecting with old comrades, memories of those who never made it home, and their reconciliation with former enemies. Every strata of the soldier experience at Gettysburg is represented from the highest general to the lowliest private. Every life is a story and provides a piece toward completing the puzzle of the human experience at Gettysburg.

Book A Guide to the Civil War in South Carolina

Download or read book A Guide to the Civil War in South Carolina written by Robert C. Jones and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Carolina, the first state to secede, had no single huge battle, a la Antietam, Chickamauga or Gettysburg. However, it experienced two of the greatest naval battles of the War in Charleston Harbor and Port Royal. South Carolina also experienced the wrath of Sherman's troops as they marched through the state in 1865. Columbia, engulfed in a great fire, experienced damage on par with Atlanta and Richmond. This book will examine several facets of the war in South Carolina, including Key Players (influential people in the war who were either born in South Carolina or had a great influence on the state), the secession movement, battles, the Hunley engagement with the Housatonic, military prisons, and South Carolina's role in the Richmond gold shipped south in April 1865. The final chapter looks at Civil War sights in South Carolina that can be visited today.

Download or read book Covered with Glory written by Rod Gragg and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle of Gettysburg was the largest engagement of the Civil War, and--with more than 51,000 casualties--also the deadliest. The highest regimental casualty rate at Gettysburg, an estimated 85 percent, was incurred by the 26th North Carolina Infantry. Who were these North Carolinians? Why were they at Gettysburg? How did they come to suffer such a grievous distinction? In Covered with Glory, award-winning historian Rod Gragg reveals the extraordinary story of the 26th North Carolina in fascinating detail. Praised for its "exhaustive scholarship" and its "highly readable style," Covered with Glory chronicles the 26th's remarkable odyssey from muster near Raleigh to surrender at Appomattox. The central focus of the book, however, is the regiment's critical, tragic role at Gettysburg, where its standoff with the heralded 24th Michigan Infantry on the first day of fighting became one of the battle's most unforgettable stories. Two days later, the 26th's bloodied remnant assaulted the Federal line at Cemetery Ridge and gained additional fame for advancing "farthest to the front" in the Pickett-Pettigrew Charge.

Book The Civil War in the South Carolina Lowcountry

Download or read book The Civil War in the South Carolina Lowcountry written by Ron Roth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most dramatic and consequential events of the Civil War era took place in the South Carolina Lowcountry between Charleston and Savannah. From Robert Barnwell Rhett's inflammatory 1844 speech in Bluffton calling for secession, to the last desperate attempts by Confederate forces to halt Sherman's juggernaut, the region was torn apart by war. This history tells the story through the experiences of two radically different military units--the Confederate Beaufort Volunteer Artillery and the U.S. 1st South Carolina Regiment, the first black Union regiment to fight in the war--both organized in Beaufort, the heart of the Lowcountry.
