Book excerpt: The Federal Writers Project creates an image of South Carolina of years past All of us, at one time or another, have had a strong desire to be able to get into a time machine and be transported magically to an earlier place and time. Science has not yet produced for us such a time machine, but the Federal Writers Project (FWP), a division of the Works Progress Administration, did produce for prosperity guides to all of the old 48 states. Using talented local researchers and writers the FWP created an image of America fifty plus years ago. A reprint of the original, South Carolina: The WPA Guide to the Palmetto State is divided into three sections: 19 essays on a variety of topics ranging from history to cookery; detailed descriptions of the 11 towns in the state that had populations of more than 10,000; and 21 remarkably detailed guided tours to all sections of the state. In addition to the original chapters, there are two appendices—updated highway numbers for each tour and a guide to getting off the present Interstate Highway System and picking up the guided tours. South Carolina's Guide is very much a product of its times. The essays and tours mince no words in describing the state's poverty or the reality of a world in which class and race played major roles. For those who have studied and taught South Carolina history, the old Guide has been an indispensable reference work. Parts of it may be dated to some jaded modern eyes; some phrases may be jarring to the post-1954 generation. However, the original South Carolina: The WPA Guide to the Palmetto State was what its cover claimed it to be. It accurately described the state as it was—not as romantics wanted it to be.

Book Sombreros and Motorcycles in a Newer South

Download or read book Sombreros and Motorcycles in a Newer South written by P. Nicole King and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949, Alan Schafer opened South of the Border, a beer stand located on bucolic farmland in Dillon County, South Carolina, near the border separating North and South Carolina. Even at its beginning, the stand catered to those interested in Mexican-themed kitsch--sombreros, toy pinatas, vividly colored panchos, salsas. Within five years, the beer stand had grown into a restaurant, then a series of restaurants, and then a theme park, complete with gas stations, motels, a miniature golf course, and an adult-video shop. Flashy billboards--featuring South of the Border's stereotypical bandit Pedro--advertised the locale from 175 miles away. An hour south of Schafer's site lies the Grand Strand region--sixty miles of South Carolina beaches and various forms of recreation. Within this region, Atlantic Beach exists. From the 1940s onward, Atlantic Beach has been a primary tourist destination for middle-class African Americans, as it was one of the few recreational beaches open to them in the region. Since the 1990s, the beach has been home to the Atlantic Beach Bikefest, a motorcycle festival event that draws upward of 10,000 African Americans and other tourists annually. Sombreros and Motorcycles in a Newer South studies both locales, separately and together, to illustrate how they serve as lens for viewing the historical, social, and aesthetic aspects embedded in a place's culture over time. In doing so, author Nicole King engages with concepts of the "Newer South," the contemporary era of southern culture which integrates Old South and New South history and ideas about issues such as race, taste, and regional authenticity. Tracing South Carolina's tourism industry through these locales, King analyzes the collision of southern identity and place with national, corporatized culture from the 1940s onward. Sombreros and Motorcycles in a Newer South locates campy but historic tourist sites that serve as important texts for better understanding how culture moves and more inclusive notions of what it means to be southern today.

Book excerpt: Chris Aragon provides a direct, somewhat cynical, and slightly gruff look at the everyday tasks and responsibilities of being an Over The Road Truck Driver as an employee of a very large trucking company. Hollywood has always painted the public picture of what yesterday’s trucker looked like, but Chris’s hard toned look at the modern and highly regulated Commercial Drivers License paints a much different picture. With Road Safety at the center, Chris attempts to explain some of the complexity that is today’s Trucking Industry for the Non-Owner-Operator of the 18 Wheeler Culture. From the starting point of obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver’s License to the day to day dealings with company management to the suggestions for comfort while out on a national tour, Chris lays his no nonsense approach out in a raw sense without the hidden meanings tucked in the folds. In Chris’s previous full career as a Corrections Officer Sergeant in a maximum security setting, he developed a Funny Frowned Face as opposed to a poker face in communicating his thoughts. Chris often jokes about his Grumpy Personality with many of his friends and family and he hopes that the raw and pungent outlay doesn’t protrude itself as overly provocative to any reader.
