Book Placenames of Portsmouth

Download or read book Placenames of Portsmouth written by Nancy W Grossman and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The business of naming is as old as language itself. The names a town bestows on its rivers and river banks, streets, buildings and other landmarks provide a window into the soul of that town, through the history it chooses to celebrate. In 1623, the first settlers arrived in what would one day be known as Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Native Americans in these parts already had a name for the swift flowing Piscataqua River. The settlers took over from there. Delighted with the vegetation they found, they named their new home Strawbery Banke. Join Portsmouth writer, artist and amateur historian Nancy Grossman for an informative and entertaining stroll through the town's historic South End and downtown, its Victorian neighborhoods and the newer streets of the 20th century - and beyond. 466 Streets, 253 Images, 16 Maps Meet a colorful array of Portsmouth's citizens - heroes, heroines, everyday folks and pillars of the community, even the odd scoundrel. Visitors from 'away' have made their mark too, but let there be no mistake - this is a Portsmouth story, through and through.

Book Lives of Consequence

Download or read book Lives of Consequence written by Patricia Q. Wall and published by Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire and Portsmouth Historical Society. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential chapter in the history of Massachusetts's Province of Maine has long been hidden in plain sight: the presence and role of numerous enslaved Blacks (i.e., Africans and people of mixed African, Native American, and white heritage) in its Parish of Kittery--an area that included what are now the towns of Eliot and Berwick. Bringing that missing story to light is the intent of this book. Local historian Patricia Wall has attempted here to push aside that barrier word 'slave' to try to see the men, women, and children to whom that inhuman label applied; to discover their personal circumstances and actions in order to reveal their impact on the early development of this region. In the course of several years of meticulous research into primary sources of all types--deeds, probate records, court files, church records, newspapers, manuscripts, and so on--Wall has skillfully uncovered the identify of more than 450 enslaved individuals who lived in the areas under investigation from the seventeenth century to 1820. In a series of contextual chapters, Wall discusses these people in a remarkable degree of detail and places them into the context of their life and times. Several appendices list both the enslaved persons and their owners and other detailed data.Lives of Consequence makes an important contribution to a more rounded understanding of life in the colonial and federal periods in early Maine. As such, it will be of interest to many academic historians and students, to professional and amateur genealogists, to museum curators, and to everyone concerned with recapturing this long overlooked aspect of the region¿s history. It is an important contribution to the growing literature that is "filling the gaps" in our previously often-biased interpretation of the New England past, and dovetails nicely with the mission of the Portsmouth Historical Society.

Download or read book Imagining Ichabod written by Paula Bennett and published by Bauer and Dean Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 25 adapted historic recipes.Prompted by a serendipitous visit to a bookstore, an epiphany leads Paula and her husband, Harvey, to southern Maine where they both fall in love with the General Ichabod Goodwin House--affectionately called Old Fields. Built at the end of the eighteenth century, the historic house still has its original nine-over-six windows, early Georgian moldings, and wide-plank painted wood floors. But it was the keeping room with its eight-foot wide, five-foot high hearth that captured their imaginations. After they sign the deed, the author begins to diligently research the house's first inhabitants, taking us back into early American history. Paula's research continues as she undertakes the challenge of furnishing the eight rooms in the original part of the house. Trying to evoke an eighteenth-century atmosphere, Paula and Harvey visit historic house museums and build a library on early American décor. Most helpful were the two inventories the author found in the collection of Goodwin family papers at Dartmouth--those of the first two Goodwins to head Old Fields, a father and son, both named Ichabod.Once the house is furnished, Paula's favorite pastime becomes imagining the lives of those first two Ichabods and their families over 250 years ago, not only their daily routines, but how their lives intertwined with larger historic events that helped shape America. Aside from having a passion for early American history, Paula's avid interest in the culinary arts leads her to research and recreate historic recipes, which are woven throughout the text. Another wonderful addition to this story is the discoveries from the archaeological dig in progress outside their front door. Based on the myriad items unearthed since 2011, many details about the chronology of the property and the house have come to light. This book is for anyone who lives in a historic house; who loves archaeology, early American history, and historic cooking; or for those armchair adventurers who will enjoy the Bennetts journey as they "cultivate a slower, less technology-based existence, cherry-picking from the past" and incorporating those pickings into their twenty-first-century lifestyle.
