Book The Sustainable City VIII 2 Volume Set

Download or read book The Sustainable City VIII 2 Volume Set written by S.S. Zubir and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 1429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With majority of the Earth’s people now urban dwellers, and cities being the most efficient habitat for the utilisation of resources, it is imperative that we continue to support standards of living and efficiencies of urban areas. However, the urbanisation process has not been without its problems. While much has been done to address the original issues surrounding the quality of urban life, new challenges continue to arise. It is no longer sustainable to achieve improvements by means that require greater and greater energy consumption as we did in the past. Despite their complexity, however, cities are a great laboratory for architects, engineers, and other key professionals to apply new ideas and new technology to meet our requirements for more sustainable city environments. Containing papers presented at the latest in a series of conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, these proceedings, split in to two volumes address not just environmental, architectural, and engineering concerns, but also quality of life, security, risk, and heritage. The diversity of topics and the case studies based on existing projects make the book an important contribution to the literature on urban planning.

Book Activism and the Policy Process

Download or read book Activism and the Policy Process written by Anna Yeatman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activists - protecting rainforests, demanding increased childcare, developing local community housing, campaigning for AIDS funding or protecting consumers - are as much part of the political landscape as the media, parliament, peak industry groups, political parties or trade unions. This collection explores the idea of policy activism and its relationship to the processes that not only set but implement and deliver the policy agenda. Policy activists operate both inside and outside government. They include community-based organisers, activist bureaucrats, service providers and professionals. Policy activism has been barely explored in existing literature. This collection puts the idea on the map. It is an innovative contribution to the literature, using case studies across a broad range of policy areas. 'This volume opens the window on an aspect of the policy process that rarely receives attention from students of politics or policy anywhere across the globe. The framework presented and the cases included in these pages provide a glimpse of the workings of a complex democracy, describing a range of actors responding creatively to the dynamics of social, political and economic change. It is fascinating to see how policy functions and social values appear to be more important to these processes than the formal structures of the government in which they are placed.' - Beryl A. Radin, Professor of Public Administration and Policy, State University of New York at Albany

Book Planning Metropolitan Australia

Download or read book Planning Metropolitan Australia written by Stephen Hamnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia has long been a highly (sub)urbanized nation, but the major distinctive feature of its contemporary settlement pattern is that the great majority of Australians live in a small number of large metropolitan areas focused on the state capital cities. The development and application of effective urban policy at a regional scale is a significant global challenge given the complexities of urban space and governance. Building on the editors’ previous collection The Australian Metropolis: A Planning History (2000), this new book examines the recent history of metropolitan planning in Australia since the beginning of the twenty-first century. After a historical prelude, the book is structured around a series of six case studies of metropolitan Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, the fast-growing metropolitan region of South-East Queensland centred on Brisbane, and the national capital of Canberra. These essays are contributed by some of Australia’s leading urbanists. Set against a dynamic background of economic change, restructured land uses, a more diverse population, and growing spatial and social inequality, the book identifies a broad planning consensus around the notion of making Australian cities more contained, compact and resilient. But it also observes a continuing gulf between the simplified aims of metropolitan strategies and our growing understanding of the complex functioning of the varied communities in which most people live. This book reflects on the raft of planning challenges presented at the metropolitan scale, looks at what the future of Australian cities might be, and speculates about the prospects of more effective metropolitan planning arrangements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian-born and now New South Wales-based, Flossie Peitsch is both a noted visual artist and a mother of six. She is also an active community artist who has involved her family and hundreds of others in major art projects relating to Australia's history and current ways of life. Using performance and installation art techniques, as well as traditional painting and drawing - and also women's crafts of embroidery, tapestry and knitting - Flossie loses few opportunities to engage the imagination and creativity of those involved in the projects and also those who witness them. This is an intriguing and richly illustrated book focused on an extraordinarily vibrant and effective Australian artist who operates slightly outside the mainstream.
