Book Connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia written by ADBI and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes how closer regional connectivity and economic integration between South Asia and Southeast Asia can benefit both regions, with a focus on the role played by infrastructure and public policies in facilitating this process. It examines major developments in South Asian–Southeast Asian trade and investment, economic cooperation, the role of economic corridors, and regional cooperation initiatives. In particular, it identifies significant opportunities for strengthening these integration efforts as a result of the recent opening up of Myanmar in political, economic, and financial terms. This is particularly the case for land-based transportation—highways and railroads—and energy trading. The report’s focus is on connectivity in a broad sense, covering both hardware and software, including investment in infrastructure, energy trading, trade facilitation, investment financing, and support for national and regional policies.

Book The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia

Download or read book The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia written by Asian Development Bank and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a review of the economics of climate change in the Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. It confirms that the region is highly vulnerable to climate change and demonstrates that a wide range of adaptation measures are already being applied. The report also shows that the region has a great potential to contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction, and that the costs to the region and globally of taking no early action against climate change could be very high. The basic policy message is that efforts must be made to apply all feasible and economically viable adaptation and mitigation measures as key elements of a sustainable development strategy for Southeast Asia. It also argues that the current global economic crisis offers Southeast Asia an opportunity to start a transition towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy by introducing green stimulus programs that can simultaneously shore up economies, create jobs, reduce poverty, lower carbon emissions, and prepare for the worst effects of climate change.

Book Regional Report on Status of Road Safety

Download or read book Regional Report on Status of Road Safety written by World Health Organization. Regional Office for South-East Asia and published by Searo Publication. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road traffic injury is one of the fastest growing epidemics in the WHO South-East Asia Region. The Regional Report on Status of Road Safety provides an opportunity to depict the extent and scale of this particular problem. All member countries of the WHO SEA Region except DPR Korea participated in the survey. The data used in the report were endorsed by the relevant government authorities of each country. An estimated 288,768 people were killed on the roads of the South-East Asia Region in 2007. Almost three-quarters of all these deaths occur among the most vulnerable road-users, i.e. motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists. This report also reaffirms our understanding of the rapid proliferation of two- and three-wheelers in the Region, which is a major risk factor for road traffic injuries. All member countries in the Region have lead agencies in place to address road traffic injuries but need more political commitment and support to reduce the huge toll of road traffic injuries.

Book South Asia Regional Dynamics and Strategic Concerns

Download or read book South Asia Regional Dynamics and Strategic Concerns written by Robert A. Lamb and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the United States withdraws most or all of its forces from Afghanistan, what issues are likely to continue to be of concern to U.S. policymakers in South Asia? What regional dynamics are likely to affect their ability to achieve policy priorities there? While the United States and its coalition partners have focused primarily on Afghanistan and Pakistan over the past 12 years, the strategic dynamics most likely to be relevant over the next 12 years will probably be clustered around relationships linking Pakistan, India, and China. The authors of this report propose a framework for U.S. policy in South Asia centered around that cluster rather than the more common cluster of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The report includes an analysis of U.S. policy priorities, contingencies, and regional dynamics in South Asia.

Book Education in South East Asia

Download or read book Education in South East Asia written by Colin Brock and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on education in South-East Asia is the very first of its kind to comprehensively cover and discuss the education systems and issues in all the countries in the region - the ten member nations of the Association of South-East Asian nations (ASEAN) plus Timor Leste. The eleven chapters on country case studies are written by education country experts and give the readers an overview of each country’s education system, while also highlighting issues currently significant to each system. There are also thematic chapters on selected issues reckoned to be significant in the region such as: gender, education and development; higher education ; language policy; quality assurance; and sustainable development. This book is a significant contribution to academic literature in this field in that the South-East Asian region is, in general, one of the leading zones of the developing world, containing within it advancing economies, such as Brunei and Malaysia, and a key global hub, Singapore. Even the poorer countries are showing signs of significant advance. The region also contains the most populous Islamic country in the world, Indonesia, and examples of the educational legacies of a variety of forms of European and American colonialism. The book is therefore a source of reference to better understand education in a region where diverse religious, political and cultural aspects are found and interrelate in a form of serious co-operation.
