Book excerpt: This volume presents a selection of essays by the late Willem Vorster, one of the most prominent New Testament scholars to have emerged from South Africa. An introductory essay by the editor explains Vorster's contribution to New Testament scholarship in general and to South African New Testament scholarship in particular. Vorster's essays are grouped primarily under the topics "Language and Linguistics", "Reader Response", "Narratology", "Historical Paradigms" and "The Historical Jesus". In addition to his work on method, Vorster was a well-known Markan scholar, and this is reflected in the fact that more than half of his methodological essays are concerned with that Gospel. The book includes a curriculum vitae, a full bibliography and indexes.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches written by Benedetto and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-11-03 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its name implies, the Reformed tradition grew out of the 16th century Protestant Reformation. The Reformed churches consider themselves to be the Catholic Church reformed. The movement originated in the reform efforts of Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) of Zurich and John Calvin (1509-1564) of Geneva. Although the Reformed movement was dependent upon many Protestant leaders, it was Calvin's tireless work as a writer, preacher, teacher, and social and ecclesiastical reformer that provided a substantial body of literature and an ethos from which the Reformed tradition grew. Today, the Reformed churches are a multicultural, multiethnic, and multinational phenomenon. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches contains information on the major personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches. This is done through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and over 800 cross-referenced dictionary entries on leaders, personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches.

Download or read book A Select Bibliography of Periodical Articles on Southern African Church History 1975 1989 written by J. W. Hofmeyr and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers was presented at the eighteenth symposium of the Research Institute for Theology and Religion (Unisa) in 1994. The transition to a full democracy has been something of a bloodless revolution in South Africa, but a post- apartheid society can only remain bloodless if it is complemented by many smaller revolutions. These smaller revolutions are mainly concerned with the reconstruction process which takes place not only on a physical level, but also has to do with changed attitudes and a reconstruction of minds. The contributions in this book deal with very real issues like societal trends, economic and legal realities and the psychological effects of change on people. This book explores the problems and the opportunities of the challenge to Christianity in South Africa that sociopolitical change poses.
