Book White and Black Nationalism Ethnicity and the Future of the Homelands

Download or read book White and Black Nationalism Ethnicity and the Future of the Homelands written by Gatsha Buthelezi and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lecture entitled the Alfred and Winifred Hoernle Memorial Lecture (in memory of Professor R. F. Alfred Hoernle, President of the South African Institute of Race Relations from 1934 to 1943, and his wife, Winifred Hoernle, president of the Institute from 1948 to 1950, and again from 1953 to 1954), is delivered under the auspices of the Institute. Invitations to deliver the lecture are extended to people having special knowledge and experience of racial problems in Africa and elsewhere. It is hoped that the Hoernle Memorial Lecture provides a platform for constructive and helpful contributions to thought and action. While the lecturers are entirely free to express their own views, which may not be those of the Institute as expressed in its formal decisions, it is hoped that lecturers will be guided by the Institute's declaration of policy that 'scientific study and research must be allied with the fullest recognition of the human reactions to changing racial situations; that respectful regard must be paid to the traditions and usages of various national, racial and tribal groups which comprise the population; and that due account must be taken of opposing views earnestly held'

Book Liberals against Apartheid

Download or read book Liberals against Apartheid written by R. Vigne and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-10-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Liberal Party of South Africa was founded in 1953 to promote nonracial democratic liberalism in opposition to white supremacist apartheid. Under Alan Paton, it quickly moved into the extra-parliamentary field and won considerable black support, competing with Communism and black nationalism. Growing influence brought heavy government attack, and the 'banning' of nearly 50 of its leaders, black and white. Despite forced dissolution in 1968, the Liberals' ideas have triumphed over those of left and right in the 'new South Africa'.

Book excerpt: WITS: The Early Years is a history of the University up to 1939. First established in 1922, the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg developed out of the South African School of Mines in Kimberley circa 1896. Examining the historical foundations, the struggle to establish a university in Johannesburg, and the progress of the University in the two decades prior to World War II, historian Bruce Murray captures the quality and texture of life in the early years of Wits University and the personalities who enlivened it and contributed to its growth. Particular attention is given to the wider issues and the challenges which faced Wits in its formative years. The book examines the role Wits came to occupy as a major centre of liberal thought and criticism in South Africa, its contribution to the development of the professions of the country, the relationship of its research to the wider society, and its attempts to grapple with a range of peculiarly South African problems, such as the admission of black students to the University and the relations of English- and Afrikaans-speaking white students within it. This edition of WITS: The Early Years is republished in the University’s centenary year with a preface by Keith Breckenridge, who writes, ‘In the republication of Murray’s two volume history of Wits, readers have an opportunity to explore the often dramatic and contested story of this university ... Murray produced an intimate, almost scandalous intellectual history of the institution that served as his home for practically half a century.’

Book Political Science in South Africa

Download or read book Political Science in South Africa written by Peter Vale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013 and in 2014 respectively, the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS) and Politikon (the South African Journal of Political Studies) celebrate their 40th anniversary. Also, in April 2014 South Africa celebrates twenty years since the advent of the post-Apartheid democracy, and the birth of the ‘rainbow nation’. This book provides a timely account of the birth and evolution of South African politics over the past four decades, but also of the study of Political Science and International Relations in this country. Fourteen political scientists contribute chapters to this volume, situating the study of politics within its global context and recounting the development of politics as a field of study at South African universities. The fourteen contributions evaluate the state of the discipline(s) and suggest conclusions that are surprising and in many instances unsettling, not only with regards to what and how politics is taught, but also how its study has variously gained and lost pertinence for South Africans’ understanding of their own polity as well as its place in the world. The implications are uncomfortable, and pose interesting challenges for South African scholarship, pedagogy and national self-reflection. This book was published as a special issue of Politikon.

Download or read book Here is a Table written by Ndumiso Dladla and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of racism is that it is the systematic doubt concerning the humanity of the other. It is a means to an end, namely, to pursue the dehumanisation of the other for one’s sole and exclusive benefit. The doubt is in itself ethically indefensible. Yet, it ultimately acquires the status of an incontrovertible truth around which economic and political life is organised and conducted. This has been and continues to be the reality in South Africa today. The hypothesis of this book is that a philosophical-historical study of racism will reveal that it has only ever been and continues to be white supremacy. In South Africa the actuality of the doubt is that it has always arisen from one side (“whiteness”) and directed itself against the other (“blackness”). Our purpose is to show that racism properly speaking is white supremacy and that it cannot be properly understood without African philosophy.
