Book Louis Botha

Download or read book Louis Botha written by Richard Steyn and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Man Apart Richard Steyn once again brings to life a South African icon. Louis Botha was the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, a union he did much to create in the decade after the devastation of the Anglo-Boer War. During the war Botha was a brilliant young Boer general who through his battlefield strategy won significant victories over the British in the early stages of the war. When the weight of British arms overwhelmed the Boers, Botha along with Smuts did much to encourage peace between English and Afrikaner and led the country to Union in 1910 and dominion status. Botha was a big-hearted and generous man who showed magnanimity in his dealings with all, including former enemies. He led the South African troops to victory and the capture of German South West Africa – prior to this he had to put down a revolt of pro-German Afrikaners. At the Peace of Versailles, representing South Africa, he pleaded unsuccessfully for magnanimity towards the Germans. Botha was a globally respected figure – he and Smuts effectively operated as a double act in South Africa and on the international stage before Botha's untimely death in August 1919 at only 57. In A Man Apart this tragically short life is illuminated in full.

Book Open the Jail Doors We Want to Enter

Download or read book Open the Jail Doors We Want to Enter written by Stuart A. Kallen and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Defiance Campaign marked a new chapter in the struggle...going to prison became a badge of honor among Africans."―Nelson Mandela, 1952 On June 26, 1952, twenty-five men and five women entered the waiting room of a railway station in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. If they had been white people of European descent, they would have gone unnoticed. But they were black South Africans who were violating the waiting room's "Europeans Only" sign as part of the Campaign of Defiance against Unjust Laws. Instituted by the African National Congress (ANC), the campaign aimed to peacefully defy a series of laws known as apartheid―a system of legal racial segregation. Across the country, similar protests took place and more than 250 resisters went to jail that day. The ANC's strategy was to fill the jails to overflowing and cause the police and judicial branches of government to break down. In July fifteen hundred men and women took part in the campaign; in August more than two thousand went to jail. The Defiance Campaign eventually triumphed, but not before the tragedy of bloodshed, violence, and death among three generations of South Africans. In this riveting story of the long struggle against apartheid, we'll explore the reasons why thousands were willing to die in the fight for civil rights. And we'll witness how their courageous efforts led to the day in 1994 when Nelson Mandela stood before thousands of free South Africans as the nation's first black president.
