Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorious in its previous campaigns in Africa against native armies, Britain now confronted an altogether different foe. The Boers proved to be formidable opponents, masterfully compensating for inferior numbers with grim determination, resourcefulness and strong religious faith. Their mobility, expert use of cover, and knowledge of the terrain, in which they employed powerful long-range magazine rifles, gave them initial advantages. By contrast the British suffered from inadequate transport, insufficient mounted troops and poor intelligence. Despite marshalling the immense resources of their empire, the British were to be severely tested in a war which one general described as 'the graveyard of many a soldier's reputation'.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boer and Britisher in South Africa: A History of the Boer-British War and the Wars for United South Africa, Together With Biographies, of the Great Men Who Made the History of South Africa The people of South Africa are often judged wrongly, especially in England, where every one cannot rise to the unprejudiced point of view of the great Gladstone, who could appreciate the worth of these people, who, to pre serve their freedom, left their former homes in Cape Colony and strove for an independent existence in the desolate, wild country inhabited only by hostile savages. Download or read book OFF HIST OF THE WAR IN SOUTH A written by Major General Sir Frederick Maurice and published by Naval & Military Press. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of several distinguished histories of the Boer War - including works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Leopold Amery - this is the most detailed, exhaustive, and probably definitive. It is the official British history of the conflict, complete in four substantial volumes accompanied by four slimmer volumes of maps. Vol. One covers the run-up to war, with descriptions of the South African terrain and the condition of the British and Boer forces. After the arrival of Sir Redvers Buller to take command of British forces, it narrates the sorry story of 'Black Week' in December 1899 - the trio of defeats when three British columns were trounced at Magersfontein, Colenso and Stormberg. The first volume concludes with the arrival of 'Bobs' - Lord Roberts - to take over command from the hapless Buller and his re-organisation of the British army. Vol. Two opens with the Boer siege of Kimberley and its relief by British forces, followed by the British pursuit of the veteran Boer General Cronje and his defeat at Paardeberg. The campaign in the Orange Free State around its capital, Bloemfontein, follows. Then comes the sombre story of Spion Kop, a bloody British defeat. The volume concludes with an account of the siege and relief of Ladysmith. Vol Three concerns the beginning of the guerrilla phase of the war, with clearing operations in the Orange River and Transvaal against the legendary Boer guerrilla commander De Wet. There is also an account of the famous defence of Mafeking by Baden Powell, founder of the Scout movement, and of its relief which sent Britain's population into paroxysms of patriotic jubilation. Vol .Four is concerned with the final, most painful, phase of the war: the endgame. Under the command of Kitchener, and Generals later prominent in the Great War such as Plumer, French and Hamilton, the British waged a war of attrition to stamp out the final sparks of Boer resistance, using such 'scorched earth' methods as farm burning, blockhouse building and, most controversially of all, concentration camps. No serious student of the war can afford to be without these books.2004 Vol I xvii+i+526pp, Vol 2 xvi + 701pp, Vol 3 xiii + 609pp, Vol 4 xv + 767pp, 1 plate. Vol I (Maps) South Africa General Map and maps 1-17 with 6 freehand sketches. Vol 2 (Maps) No.18-37. With 6 freehand sketches. Vol 3 (Maps) No. 38-55. With 11 freehand sketches. Book The German Official Account of the the War in South Africa

Download or read book The German Official Account of the the War in South Africa written by Colonel W H H Waters and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-volume (+ map compendium) set of 'The German Official Account of the War in South Africa' is one of the most significant books written about the Second Anglo-Boer War. Both the first phase - the Boer offensive (October to December 1899) - and the second phase - the British offensive (January to September 1900) - are detailed. The history is characterised by the thoroughness, which is a prominent feature of German official productions of this period, and despite criticisms of the British methods and military tactics, is written in an objective and unbiased manner. The conflict broke out in 1899 after the failure of the Bloemfontein Conference when Boer irregulars and militia attacked colonial settlements in nearby British colonies. Starting in October 1899, the Boers placed Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking under siege, and won a string of victories at Colenso, Magersfontein and Stormberg. In response to these developments, increased numbers of British Army soldiers were brought to Southern Africa and mounted largely unsuccessful attacks against the Boers. However, British military fortunes changed when their commanding officer, General Redvers Buller, was replaced by Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener, who relieved the three besieged cities and invaded the two Boer Republics in early 1900 at the head of a 180,000-strong expeditionary force. The Boers, aware they were unable to resist such a large force, chose to refrain from fighting pitched battles, allowing the British to occupy both republics and their capitals, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. When the Boer War started, the Foreign Office granted permission for military attachés from each 'friendly power' to act as an observer in South Africa. They were instructed to wear British khaki uniforms bearing their national insignia and rank badges; all were later awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal. The history was prepared in the historical section of the great General Staff, Berlin and translated by Colonel Hubert Du Cane (military attaché at Sofia). This translation was originally published in 1906. Germany took a keen interest in the Boer War and had many observers.
