Download or read book Roots of the Classical written by Peter Van der Merwe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of the Classical identifies and traces to their sources the patterns that make Western classical music unique, setting out the fundamental laws of melody and harmony, and sketching the development of tonality between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The author then focuses on the years 1770-1910, treating the Western music of this period - folk, popular, and classical - as a single, organically developing, interconnected unit in which the popular idiom was constantly feeding into 'serious' music, showing how the same patterns underlay music of all kinds.

Book Satie the Bohemian

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Moore Whiting
  • Publisher : Clarendon Press
  • Release : 1999-02-18
  • ISBN : 0191584525
  • Pages : 610 pages

Download or read book Satie the Bohemian written by Steven Moore Whiting and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-02-18 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erik Satie (1866-1925) came of age in the bohemian subculture of Montmartre, with its artists' cabarets and cafés-concerts. Yet apologists have all too often downplayed this background as potentially harmful to the reputation of a composer whom they regarded as the progenitor of modern French music. Whiting argues, on the contrary, that Satie's two decades in and around Montmartre decisively shaped his aesthetic priorities and compositional strategies. He gives the fullest account to date of Satie's professional activities as a popular musician, and of how he transferred the parodic techniques and musical idioms of cabaret entertainment to works for concert hall. From the esoteric Gymnopédies to the bizarre suites of the 1910s and avant-garde ballets of the 1920s (not to mention music journalism and playwriting), Satie's output may be daunting in its sheer diversity and heterodoxy; but his radical transvaluation of received artistic values makes far better sense once placed in the fascinating context of bohemian Montmartre.

Book John Philip Sousa March Collection

  • Author : John Philip Sousa
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2019-02-02

Download or read book John Philip Sousa March Collection written by John Philip Sousa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is fair to say audiences love John Philip Sousa's marches, and for good reason. From the tuneful nature of his themes to the many associations his marches have created make them not only some of the best known American music but amongst the most performed. And unlike many of Sousa's contemporaries, his marches have stood the test of time. The four marches in this collection have strong associations with America's birthday, Monty Python, the United States Marine Corp, and one of America's greatest newspapers. The study scores in this volume use material as it appears on the original parts with a handful of small alterations. The reason for this is twofold. First, many band libraries contain these early editions and continue to use them when the pieces are programmed, and second, conductors should be able to easily see exactly how the players are being told by the composer to perform. Since the traditional conductor's score at the time the marches were written was the first cornet part, having full scores can be quite useful.
