Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than fifty years, students and teachers have made the two-volume resource Sources of Indian Traditions their top pick for an accessible yet thorough introduction to Indian and South Asian civilizations. Volume 2 contains an essential selection of primary readings on the social, intellectual, and religious history of India from the decline of Mughal rule in the eighteenth century to today. It details the advent of the East India Company, British colonization, the struggle for liberation, the partition of 1947, and the creation of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and contemporary India. This third edition now begins earlier than the first and second, featuring a new chapter on eighteenth-century intellectual and religious trends that set the stage for India's modern development. The editors have added material on Gandhi and his reception both nationally and abroad and include different perspectives on and approaches to Partition and its aftermath. They expand their portrait of post-1947 India and Pakistan and add perspectives on Bangladesh. The collection continues to be divided thematically, with a section devoted to the drafting of the Indian constitution, the rise of nationalism, the influence of Western thought, the conflict in Kashmir, nuclear proliferation, minority religions, secularism, and the role of the Indian political left. A phenomenal text, Sources of Indian Traditions is more indispensable than ever for courses in philosophy, religion, literature, and intellectual and cultural history.

Book Sources for the History of British India in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Sources for the History of British India in the Seventeenth Century written by Shafaat Ahmad Khan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1926, is neither a catalogue of libraries and record offices, no is it a selection of transcripts from the English and Indian archives. The object of the undertaking is two-fold: in the first place, it looks at supplying a critical analysis of essential data for the study of seventeenth-century British India; in the second place, it looks at bringing within one purview all the materials lying scattered in various record offices. Every important document has been subjected to a close and careful scrutiny, and references have been given to printed works that throw further light on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a scholar wishes to create a picture of a topical society in all its aspects, there is little of what he needs to know that he cannot know, although there may still be much that he cannot understand. For the history of Greece and Rome, there is a great deal that is simply unknowable. From the end of the archaic age of Greece, there is an unbroken sequence of works by Greek and, later, Roman historians down to the end of antiquity. Their vision and range of interest were often limited and much of what they produced has been lost. Some help may be derived from the documentary material supplied in antiquity, material that was the product of officials organising public activities, or heads of families organising their affairs, or individuals leaving their mark on the world. Beyond this, the evidence of archaeology and numismatics may also be helpful. The four essays in this book set out to characterise the nature of the ancient literary tradition, the inscriptional material, the archaeological and numismatic evidence and to explain how and for what purposes they may be used.
