Book Coleridge s Ancient Mariner

Download or read book Coleridge s Ancient Mariner written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Barrytown Limited. This book was released on 1993 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. This edition of "Ancient Mariner" makes available for the first time all the versions of the poem published over thirty years in Lyrical Ballads, Sybilline Leaves, and the 1828 Poetical Works, as well as those confined to notebooks and private copies. The juxtaposition of revisions in parallel text avoid granting privilege to any one version, making Coleridge's changes evident in full detail. Tracing the complex history of the poem's publication, the accompanying commentary places this edition in the context of Romantic scholarship and raises many critical issues for the understanding of Coleridge's most widely known and studied poem. As Donald Ault comments in the Introduction, "Whereas Coleridge's 'Mariner' stood out in the early 19th century as a radical impertinence, an incommensurable text that needed to be tamed, Wallen's Mariner can celebrate its unreadable intrusion (and revision of) a critical tradition that has too easily believed that Coleridge knew what he believed."

Book The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems

Download or read book The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born on October 21, 1772 in Devonshire, England, Coleridge was a dreamy and thoughtful boy and not one for sports or rough play. When he was eight his father died and Coleridge was sent away to Christ's Hospital, a charity school in London where stayed for the remainder of his childhood. In 1795, Coleridge met William Wordsworth and the two poets worked closely together to found the Romantic Movement in English literature. Collected together here in this representative volume are Samuel Taylor Coleridge's most popular poems. In "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" we find the ghostly tale of a sailor's experience following a long voyage at sea. In "Kubla Khan" Coleridge relates an opium influenced dream of the legendary city Xanadu. In "Christabel" the story of its titular character and her encounter with a stranger named Geraldine is told. Along with these three major Coleridge compositions we find the poet's conversation poems, a collection of eight poems which examine and reflect upon particular life experiences. The poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge endures as some of the best of the Romantic period, whose influence on later generations of poets cannot be overstated. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by Julian B. Abernethy.

Book excerpt: “Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean.” Described by his friend Charles Lamb as “an archangel slightly damaged”, Coleridge was deemed a towering genius by many of his contemporaries, and one who, in conversation, had no equal. Fascinated by, among other subjects, psychology, philosophy and chemistry, his mind roamed extravagantly and without restraint, leading Hazlitt to opine that “there is no subject on which he has not touched, none on which he has rested”. Yet, while this literary itinerancy left some to lament his refusal to devote himself to verse, Coleridge remains one of English literature's most enduringly popular poets. From sonnets and ballads to elegies and intimate blank verse, this collection brings together poetry written throughout Coleridge's life, particularly his prolific early years, which saw the composition of poems such as 'Christabel', 'The Eolian Harp' and 'Frost at Midnight'. This volume also includes 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', one of the most popular poems ever written in the English language, and 'Kubla Khan', which highlight Coleridge's gift for suffusing his strange, haunting and captivating verse with unsurpassed musical and rhythmic qualities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the longest of Coleridge's major poems. In 1817, Coleridge wrote the following about the poem in his Biographia Literaria: The thought suggested itself (to which of us I do not recollect) that a series of poems might be composed of two sorts. In the one, incidents and agents were to be, in part at least, supernatural, and the excellence aimed at was to consist in the interesting of the affections by the dramatic truth of such emotions, as would naturally accompany such situations, supposing them real. And real in this sense they have been to every human being who, from whatever source of delusion, has at any time believed himself under supernatural agency. For the second class, subjects were to be chosen from ordinary life...In this idea originated the plan of the 'Lyrical Ballads'; in which it was agreed, that my endeavours should be directed to persons and characters supernatural, or at least Romantic; yet so as to transfer from our inward nature a human interest and a semblance of truth sufficient to procure for these shadows of imagination that willing suspension of disbelief for the moment, which constitutes poetic faith. ... With this view I wrote the 'Ancient Mariner'

Download or read book The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Illustrated Edition written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Illustrated Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Poem relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets.
