Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of essays, an international group of scholars explores the sonic consequences of transcultural contact in the early modern period. They examine how cultural configurations of sound impacted communication, comprehension, and the categorisation of people. Addressing questions of identity, difference, sound, and subjectivity in global early modernity, these authors share the conviction that the body itself is the most intimate of contact zones, and that the culturally contingent systems by which sounds made sense could be foreign to early modern listeners and to present day scholars. Drawing on a global range of archival evidence—from New France and New Spain, to the slave ships of the Middle Passage, to China, Europe, and the Mediterranean court environment—this collection challenges the privileged position of European acoustical practices within the discipline of global-historical musicology. The discussion of Black and non-European experiences demonstrates how the production of ‘the canon’ in the cosmopolitan centres of colonial empires was underpinned by processes of human exploitation and extraction of resources. As such, this text is a timely response to calls within the discipline to decolonise music history and to contextualise the canonical works of the European past. This volume is accessible to a wide and interdisciplinary audience, not only within musicology, but also to those interested in early modern global history, sound studies, race, and slavery.

Book Inscribing Difference and Resistance

Download or read book Inscribing Difference and Resistance written by Martina Horáková and published by Masarykova univerzita. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kniha Inscribing Difference and Resistance: Indigenous Women’s Personal Non-fiction and Life Writing in Australia and North America zkoumá, jak literárně-esejistická tvorba domorodých obyvatelek v USA, Kanadě a Austrálii, publikovaná v 90. letech 20. století, přispěla k formování teoretických východisek tzv. Indigenous feminism (indigenní či domorodý feminismus) a zároveň přispěla k přepsání dominantní historiografie v kontextu těchto osadnických kolonií. Rozbor textů Paully Gunn Allen a Anny Lee Walters z USA, Lee Maracle a Shirley Sterling z Kanady a Jackie Huggins a Doris Pilkington Garimara z Austrálie ukazuje, jak tyto autorky využívají hybridní, multi-žánrový styl, kombinující literární kritiku, historiografii, auto/biografické psaní a fikčně laděné příběhy, k literárnímu vyjádření své odlišné kulturní identity, transgeneračního traumatu z kolonizace a resistence vůči násilné asimilaci.

Book Child and Adolescent Development

Download or read book Child and Adolescent Development written by Gary Novak and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child and Adolescent Development: A Behavioral Systems Approach integrates the views of dynamical systems concepts with a behavioral view of development. This combination of perspectives is unique and from it something new emerges – a "behavioral systems approach" to development. It is an approach that incorporates both personal and environmental influences and the constant reciprocal interactions between nature and nurture. The book emphasizes learning as the major process for change in development and the integration of environmental influences with genetic and historical factors. Authors Gary Novak and Martha Pelaez provide a coherent understanding of the learning process in childhood and adolescence and present successful interventions to minimize typical problematic behavior during this period.

Book Auditory Processing of Complex Sounds

Download or read book Auditory Processing of Complex Sounds written by William A. Yost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book is the result of a workshop on the processing of complex sounds held in 1986. All of the important contributions that are being made to understanding auditory processing of complex sounds could not be included in a single volume. However, the chapters do touch base with many of the lines of research and theory on complex sound and its perception at the time, and was felt that they should provide both food for thought and a broad introduction to the literature on a topic that the editors were sure would be studied intensely in the following couple of decades.

Book Processing of relevant characteristics of complex sounds in normal hearing listeners and cochlear implant users

Download or read book Processing of relevant characteristics of complex sounds in normal hearing listeners and cochlear implant users written by Wiebke Heeren and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The auditory processing of complex signals is not yet fully understood making a clearer insight into auditory system processes worth aspiring to. One approach for this purpose is to gain a better understanding of the relations between physical parameters and hearing sensations by means of psychoacoustics. Suitable measures such as loudness help to characterize the perception of sound leading to more sophisticated loudness models which could be useful in optimizing hearing devices such as cochlear implants. The scope of this thesis therefore is the suprathreshold perception of sounds with different spectral, temporal and spatial content in normal-hearing listeners and cochlear implant users. Among others, this covers the applicability of categorical loudness scaling as a fast procedure to assess partial loudness as well as binaural and spatial hearing in cochlear implant users in a free-field measurement setup providing realistic spatial cues.

Book Analytic Methods of Sound Field Synthesis

Download or read book Analytic Methods of Sound Field Synthesis written by Jens Ahrens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts the focus on serving human listeners in the sound field synthesis although the approach can be also exploited in other applications such as underwater acoustics or ultrasonics. The author derives a fundamental formulation based on standard integral equations and the single-layer potential approach is identified as a useful tool in order to derive a general solution. He also proposes extensions to the single-layer potential approach which allow for a derivation of explicit solutions for circular, planar, and linear distributions of secondary sources. Based on above described formulation it is shown that the two established analytical approaches of Wave Field Synthesis and Near-field Compensated Higher Order Ambisonics constitute specific solutions to the general problem which are covered by the single-layer potential solution and its extensions.

Book Reconstructing Cultural Memory

Download or read book Reconstructing Cultural Memory written by International Comparative Literature Association. Congress and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
