Book Sound Radiation from Submerged Cylindrical Shells of Finite Length

Download or read book Sound Radiation from Submerged Cylindrical Shells of Finite Length written by John M. McCormick and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper deals with the case of the axisymmetrical (n=0) forced vibrations of a thin cylindrical shell of finite length submerged in an acoustic fluid. Numerical results are given for several structural models which may later be utilized to obtain test results. The superposition of the pressure fields obtained from the band excitations may be used to evaluate the pressure fields in the fluid which are produced by harmonic point loadings on the shell, or by loadings over small finite areas of the structure. Such results will be utilized to attempt the prediction of sound fields for a series of tests on the thin elastic cylindrical shell models of finite length.

Book Underwater Sound Radiation from a Finite Cylinder General Analysis

Download or read book Underwater Sound Radiation from a Finite Cylinder General Analysis written by P. W Smith (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sound radiation from vibrations of a finite, air-filled, thin cylindrical shell is studied by a multi-modal approach. The modes are classified according to their resonance characteristics and their efficiencies of coupling to sound. The results are used to assess radiation from a shell 6.4 ft long, 2.1 ft in radius, in the frequency range of about 100 to 300 cps. A survey of the modal properties indicates that radiation is due principally to (i) modes of gross motion of shell and end caps, and (ii) a few highly resonance, very poorly coupled lobar modes. The importance of the latter is determined by internal damping. A detailed analysis is given for the coupling of the lobar modes. (Author).

Book Acoustic Interactions With Submerged Elastic Structures Part I Acoustic Scattering And Resonances

Download or read book Acoustic Interactions With Submerged Elastic Structures Part I Acoustic Scattering And Resonances written by Ardeshir Guran and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.

Book Underwater Sound Radiation from a Finite Cylinder Part Ii Statistical Analysis

Download or read book Underwater Sound Radiation from a Finite Cylinder Part Ii Statistical Analysis written by P. W Smith (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound radiation underwater from a homogeneous, finite, airfilled cylindrical shell, forced at a point, is investigated analytically for a 6:1 range of frequencies centered near the shell's 'ring resonance' frequency. The analysis is based on a multi-modal description of the vibration and takes advantage of the simplicity resulting from statistical averaging (1) with respect to driving point location; (2) with respect to frequency within narrow bands, and (3) with respect to modal characteristics of resonance and coupling to the fluid, within classes of similar modes. Sound radiation is found to be dominated by contributions of resonant, moderately well-coupled ('edge') modes. Structural damping does not significantly affect these modes unless it is artificially enhanced. Shell velocity and near-field sound pressure are dominated by contributions of resonant, poorly-coupled modes, whose response is controlled by inherent structural damping. Closed-form analytic predictions based on simplified approximations yield fair estimates of radiated power at frequencies greater than half the ring resonance frequency. (Author).

Download or read book The Foundations of Acoustics written by Eugen Skudrzyk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and scientific progress are based upqn intuition coordinated with a wide theoretical knowledge, experimental skill, and a realistic sense of the limitations of technology. Only a deep insight into physical phenomena will supply the necessary skills to handle the problems that arise in acoustics. The acoustician today needs to be well acquainted with mathematics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and physics; he also needs a good knowledge of statistics, signal processing, electrical theory, and of many other specialized subjects. Acquiring this background is a laborious task and would require the study of many different books. It is the goal of this volume to present this background in as thorough and readable a manner as possible so that the reader may turn to specialized publications or chapters of other books for further information without having to start at the preliminaries. In trying to accomplish this goal, mathematics serves only as a tool; the better our understanding of a physical phenomenon, the less mathematics is needed and the shorter and more concise are our computa tions. A word about the choice of subjects for this volume will be helpful to the reader. Even scientists of high standing are frequently not acquainted with the fundamentals needed in the field of acoustics. Chapters I to IX are devoted to these fundamentals. After studying Chapter I, which dis cusses the units and their relationships, the reader should have no difficulty converting from one system of units to any other.

Book Acoustic Radiation of a Cylindrical Bar and an Infinite Plate Excited by the Field of a Ship Propeller

Download or read book Acoustic Radiation of a Cylindrical Bar and an Infinite Plate Excited by the Field of a Ship Propeller written by Stavros Tsakonas and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one instance, an infinitely long elastic beam with circular cross section and in another an in finite elastic plate are immersed in an acoustic fluid parallel to an operating marine propeller. The pressure field generated by the propeller and transmitted and radiated by cylindrical beam or plate is studied by means of Fourier transform techniques. Analytic expressions for the pres sure signals due to the scattering and radiating mechanisms are obtained at large distances from the disturbance and a study is made of their dependence on such important parameters as pro peller clearance, reduced frequencies, number of blades, propeller loading and geometry as well as the elastic properties of the boundary. Further more, closed form expressions of extreme sim plicity are developed for the propeller-induced vibratory force on the cylinder and on the plate. Numerical results are obtained on the assumption of constant loading for a 2- 3- and 4-bladed propeller at various distances and different pro peller clearances. The calculated sound pressures for realistic values of the parameters indicate that an appreciable sound level is obtained through the mechanism of the elastic boundary reaction to the propeller motion.
