In Soul-Selfie: #NoFilter, Heather turns the camera back on herself, exposing her own battles with those same “plagues of the heart”, as she calls them. She lays bare her raw, unfiltered inner-world and invites you to come along side and walk with her toward hope, healing, and transformation. Heather shares her experience, strength, and hope with anyone God puts in her path. Much of what she writes about will not be new information for you, but maybe, just maybe, you will finally know that you are not alone as you battle the plagues of the heart that seem to haunt us. Heather reveals her heart and hope in candid, authentic posts about fear, control, ego, jealousy, greed, worry, doubt, etc. It hasn’t been cleaned up to make her look smart or wise or that she has it all figured out. It’s real and raw and redemptive. She shares her messiness, hoping that others will feel comforted and use their own messiness to give hope and comfort to others.

Book excerpt: Selfies are ubiquitous. They can be silly or serious, casual or curated. Within moments, smart phone users can capture their image and post it across multiple social media platforms to a global audience. But do we truly understand the power of image in our image-saturated age? How can we seek God and care for each other in digital spaces? Craig Detweiler, a nationally known writer and speaker and an avid social media user, examines the selfie phenomenon, placing selfies within the long history of self-portraits in art, literature, and photography. He shows how self-portraits change our perspective of ourselves and each other in family dynamics, education, and discipleship. Challenging us to push past unhealthy obsessions with beauty, wealth, and fame, Detweiler helps us to develop a thoughtful, biblical perspective on selfies and social media and to put ourselves in proper relation to God and each other. He also explains the implications of social media for an emerging generation, making this book a useful conversation starter in homes, churches, and classrooms. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and a photo assignment for creating a selfie in response to the chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heather Carter was a self-described "everyday, average girl" until disaster struck. She was diagnosed with Leukemia. Not only was she faced with a deadly disease, she contracted an infection and ended up in ICU for a week, intubated and hooked up to a mechanical life support system. She spent over 70 days in the hospital during her 7-month battle with Leukemia. During that time, she began writing. At first, she wrote just to update friends and family on her condition. It quickly morphed into something bigger. She began writing about the issues that affected her the most: anxiety, fear, control, faith, acceptance, and love. Soul Selfie is a collection of the first 110 blog posts composed during that period and throughout her long path to recovery. During that battle, and through the parallel ordeal of dealing with a loved one's addiction, she discovered the true meaning of faith and regained her hold on life. She also came to realize that she was not alone in her quest to conquer fear, worry, control and other plagues of the heart. Even though her cancer is now in remission, she continues to write so she can encourage others and let them know that they are not alone as they confront life's tragedies and daily trials.

Book excerpt: “An intriguing odyssey” though the history of the self and the rise of narcissism (The New York Times). Self-absorption, perfectionism, personal branding—it wasn’t always like this, but it’s always been a part of us. Why is the urge to look at ourselves so powerful? Is there any way to break its spell—especially since it doesn’t necessarily make us better or happier people? Full of unexpected connections among history, psychology, economics, neuroscience, and more, Selfie is a “terrific” book that makes sense of who we have become (NPR’s On Point). Award-winning journalist Will Storr takes us from ancient Greece, through the Christian Middle Ages, to the self-esteem evangelists of 1980s California, the rise of the “selfie generation,” and the era of hyper-individualism in which we live now, telling the epic tale of the person we all know so intimately—because it’s us. “It’s easy to look at Instagram and selfie-sticks and shake our heads at millennial narcissism. But Will Storr takes a longer view. He ignores the easy targets and instead tells the amazing 2,500-year story of how we’ve come to think about our selves. A top-notch journalist, historian, essayist, and sleuth, Storr has written an essential book for understanding, and coping with, the 21st century.” —Nathan Hill, New York Times-bestselling author of The Nix “This fascinating psychological and social history . . . reveals how biology and culture conspire to keep us striving for perfection, and the devastating toll that can take.”—The Washington Post “Ably synthesizes centuries of attitudes and beliefs about selfhood, from Aristotle, John Calvin, and Freud to Sartre, Ayn Rand, and Steve Jobs.” —USA Today “Eminently suitable for readers of both Yuval Noah Harari and Daniel Kahneman, Selfie also has shades of Jon Ronson in its subversive humor and investigative spirit.” —Bookseller “Storr is an electrifying analyst of Internet culture.” —Financial Times “Continually delivers rich insights . . . captivating.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: God said He was going to do a new thing. So I asked Him, how will I recognize this new thing if I've never seen it before? "You will" was His reply. I did not perceive it at first. My heart was numb, shut down, fragments crushed to powder and scattered among the living. I seemed OK to others but to God I was cheating Him as I limped along. My heart, whatever that is, was unidentifiable. The wound still festered and scar tissue was strangling my soul, I became hard and calloused. My heart was in trouble that much I knew so why would God call on me to make a diagram of something invisible, something I knew nothing about? God looks on the heart of man and says man does not. If man does not see the heart how was I to make a diagram of it? Instinctively I knew this might be a very worthwhile adventure into the mysteries of God thinking I would benefit personally from this journey. At the time I could not have known the degree this would change me, my life and my relationship with God but I was drawn and there was no escape, God was not going to drop the matter. The journey began as a riddle and evolved into a sophisicated series of revelations spanning 8 years time. The content in these pages is supported by scripture and my own death experience. There are no answers anywhere on earth for the mission I was on so my dependence on God was the life-line for revelation. I knew nothing about the heart that was correct, no one did. My lack of heart knowledge pained me farther, deeper as mine was going to be the specimen for dissection. God asked me to gather my Soul Shards, dissect them, inspect them and make a diagram. He said by doing this my heart would be healed and we would create a new Soul-Selfie. Huh? A Soul-Selfie? Right. And then it dawned on me. Since we are made in God's image and can do similar things God does, why is such a simple task as looking beyond the outward man, beyond our human experience? But wait, God did not say we couldn't look on the heart, He simply said we don't. This opened a door of possibility. The point of the diagram was not for my heart but a greater, much larger purpose. If we could see our fellow man and woman by looking at the heart instead of an outward appearance couldn't we eradicate racism and sexism once and for all? This is why the book had to be written and placed in the hands of every human being who has soul shards that make up the mosaic image of his Soul-Selfie. Our brokenness can lead us to wholeness.

Book excerpt: A soul has infinite potential, equivalent to the powers of the cosmos and universal energies . . . but by virtue of identifying itself with a finite physical body its powers get restricted. Our physical existence is neither the start of our life's journey nor its end. All our sorrows, fears, anxiety, and stress crop up only when we associate ourselves with our physical body. But once we become aware of our existence as a soul, separate from the physical form, we start living a completely different life-- full of energy, positivity, love, and joy. This book, Soul Selfie, reveals the secrets of living a soulful existence independent of the body by covering two aspects of a spiritual journey-- one proves the independent existence of the soul and the second chronicles the personal journey of the author in his experimentation with the soul, including an out-of-body astral travel experience. Filled with easy-to-understand stories, anecdotes, personal experiences, and practical tips, Soul Selfie is a work of spiritual guidance that will help one transcend their physical existence and unleash their true potential by identifying themselves with their immortal soul. ' Interesting perspective into spirituality. An easy read' - RAJKUMAR HIRANI, Film Director

Book excerpt: A personal investigation into the real price of our holidays. Travel was once a marker of sophistication. Now the tourist is just as likely to be viewed as one locust in an annihilating swarm. Tourists face tough questions: When does economic opportunity become exploitation? How do we justify the use of climate-changing jet fuel? And can we be sure our tourist dollars aren’t propping up corrupt and brutal regimes? Now, as the world returns to travel, Steve Burgess asks: Is satisfying our own wanderlust worth the trouble it causes everyone else? Or is the tourist guilty of the charges—from voyeurism to desecration—levelled against them by everyone from environmentalists to exhausted locals to superior-feeling fellow tourists who have traded in the tour bus for “authentic experiences”? In this smart and sharply funny interrogation of our right to roam, Burgess looks into the traveller’s soul, sharing the stories of some of his most personally-significant travels, from Rome to Tana Toraja, and looking to studies and experts around the world for insight into why we travel and how we could do it better. And throughout, he tells the story of a month in Japan—his first trip outside North America—and the whirlwind cross-cultural romance that brought him there, and took him on a journey around the country in search of wonder and maybe even love.
