Book excerpt: Soul Safari, is an informative, fascinating and exciting journey through the wildlife of Africa, the world under the ocean and the power of the human spirit. Told by Gary Pressman who after being born on the Autistic spectrum went on to become a soldier, musician, photographer, Game Ranger, Hunter and safari guide in Southern Africa. He injects a unique power into his words, he was captivated by the unseen wildlife when he became a scuba diving guide in Mozambique and started a Dolphin encounter project. Searching for answers to the questions that come from being in close proximity to the natural world, Gary then embarked on a quest around the world to try and find those elusive mysteries and was ultimately successful. This is a book about animals, humans, campfires, emotions, situations and the embracing of a world that is more important to us than we are to it. The reader will learn about wildlife, about countries, about people and most importantly see him or herself somewhere in the pages. Sit down for a while and listen, this is a campfire worth sharing.

Together these realms inform, shape, challenge, and nurture the soul. Safari to Mara finds our heroine on the brink of womanhood in Masai society. The only daughter in a sonless family, she is drafted to do work in the modern world, yet tradition calls her to prepare for initiation as a wife. In the wilderness of her namesake, Kenya’s Masai Mara, she finds an improbable guide who leads her into the mysterious recesses of her awakening heart. Aria of the Horned Toad begins with the dream of a horned toad crawling out of Beatrice’s eyes,“so real I could feel his prickly little feet on my nose.” And so begins an odyssey to the source of all dreaming. Beatrice believes that in this dark and luminous place, she can find someone to fashion a dream to fix her Mama’s terrible ways, and soothe the longing in her own wild spirit.

Book Dominion

  • Author : Matthew Scully

Download or read book Dominion written by Matthew Scully and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2003-10-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." --Genesis 1:24-26 In this crucial passage from the Old Testament, God grants mankind power over animals. But with this privilege comes the grave responsibility to respect life, to treat animals with simple dignity and compassion. Somewhere along the way, something has gone wrong. In Dominion, we witness the annual convention of Safari Club International, an organization whose wealthier members will pay up to $20,000 to hunt an elephant, a lion or another animal, either abroad or in American "safari ranches," where the animals are fenced in pens. We attend the annual International Whaling Commission conference, where the skewed politics of the whaling industry come to light, and the focus is on developing more lethal, but not more merciful, methods of harvesting "living marine resources." And we visit a gargantuan American "factory farm," where animals are treated as mere product and raised in conditions of mass confinement, bred for passivity and bulk, inseminated and fed with machines, kept in tightly confined stalls for the entirety of their lives, and slaughtered in a way that maximizes profits and minimizes decency. Throughout Dominion, Scully counters the hypocritical arguments that attempt to excuse animal abuse: from those who argue that the Bible's message permits mankind to use animals as it pleases, to the hunter's argument that through hunting animal populations are controlled, to the popular and "scientifically proven" notions that animals cannot feel pain, experience no emotions, and are not conscious of their own lives. The result is eye opening, painful and infuriating, insightful and rewarding. Dominion is a plea for human benevolence and mercy, a scathing attack on those who would dismiss animal activists as mere sentimentalists, and a demand for reform from the government down to the individual. Matthew Scully has created a groundbreaking work, a book of lasting power and importance for all of us.

Book Give a Little Love

Download or read book Give a Little Love written by Llewellin RG Jegels and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of a standout artist in the field of pop and sentimental song; a star entertainer who rose to fame in Cape Town, South Africa. The world reflected in this book has several genealogical strands reaching back to other histories – to the nineteenth century theatre, to the rise of racism in South Africa, and the ways people were forced to negotiate the contradictions of being human against impossible odds. We encounter a biographer with a subject which is close to him, and which he has meticulously researched over a course of time. The book offers insights into the musical world of the phonograph, of the global popular culture after the Second World War and how this was absorbed into Cape Town’s popular culture.
