Book Soul Mates of the Lost Generation

Download or read book Soul Mates of the Lost Generation written by Lewis M. Dabney and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soul Mates of the Lost Generation recovers for contemporary readers one of the last great collections of letters of the Jazz Age. It is the correspondence between the pioneering novelist John Dos Passos and a young woman named Crystal Ross, to whom he was engaged and who reveals herself as one of the truly daring, vivacious spirits of that extraordinary time. Before his passing in 2015, Ross’s son, the esteemed literary scholar Lewis M. Dabney, completed a dual biography of the couple’s time together based on this rare correspondence. The bulk of the letters were written between 1923 and 1928, during Dos Passos’s first major creative period. The letters relate scenes from the pair’s life in the rich culture of Paris in the 1920s and their association with Hemingway, the Fitzgeralds, and other figures of literary modernism. Engaged in 1924, Dos Passos and Ross often corresponded about their ongoing work and the work of others in Dos Passos’s circle. Dos Passos introduced his fiancée to Hemingway, and the couple accompanied him and other writers on an early trip to Pamplona, the setting of The Sun Also Rises, in which Ross makes a cameo appearance. This collection of never-before-seen letters offers rare insights into the life of the influential modernist author of Manhattan Transfer, The 42nd Parallel, and The Big Money, and into that of a remarkably independent, fascinating woman.

  • Author : Tony J. Williams
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2016-08-22
  • ISBN : 1442272414
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book James Jones written by Tony J. Williams and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Jones played many roles, including short story writer, social critic, and war novelist. His most famous work, From Here to Eternity (1951), spent 20 weeks atop the New York Times bestseller’s list, won the National Book Award, was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, and was named one of the 100 best novels of the twentieth century by the Modern Library. Despite this and the success of his other novels, Some Came Running (1957) and The Thin Red Line (1962), Jones is widely forgotten today. In James Jones: The Limits of Eternity, literary scholar Tony J. Williams examines the significance of Jones’s work not only for its nuance and daring subject matter but also for its widespread popularity. In his assessment of Jones’s catalog, Williams reveals an incisive novelist who offered groundbreaking interpretations of masculinity, sexuality, gender, and identity. Williams contends that Jones should be recognized as far more than just a popular war novelist, but also as a humanitarian and literary pioneer, particularly in probing gender and queer issues. A quintessentially American novelist, Jones was never afraid to look openly at the flaws of his society, examine how it could adversely affect individual victims, and tacitly suggest possible alternatives. He recognized the presence of gays and lesbians in American culture during an overtly repressive time, which makes his work relevant to many areas of contemporary criticism. Demonstrating his significant contribution to contemporary American literature, James Jones: The Limits of Eternity will be of interest to scholars of war narratives, gender studies, and literary studies.

Book Forsythia

Download or read book Forsythia written by Peter Hovenden Longley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encased within the drama of John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga, Peter Hovenden Longley weaves an autobiographical reminiscence of his own English family from the 1880s to the 1960s. Brought up in the last days of ‘Forsythia’, a world of the 3 percent born in privilege to serve the British Empire, Longley celebrates his family’s lost generations. Nothing—neither the abdication of the king and emperor, Edward VIII, in 1936, nor Adolf Hitler’s relentless bombs—could shake the British people’s conviction that theirs was the eternal kingdom. Doggedly, they believed that after a good cup of strong, Indian tea, and a game of croquet on the lawn, ‘Forsythia’ would go on forever. Forced to accept that the world they once loved was changing around them, Longley’s family and their peers struggled to adapt to a new reality. With the permission of the Galsworthy estate, Longley analyzes The Forsyte Saga and reflects on the impact of this work of literature. His was the last generation of ‘Forsytes’, witnesses to those final rays that filtered across the empire on which they all thought the sun would never set. Fans of popular Edwardian-period shows like Downton Abbey, will fall in love with this hefty tome that examines the culture of that alluring time period through parallel lenses. —SAN FRANCISCO BOOK REVIEW/SACRAMENTO BOOK REVIEW

Book excerpt: Love, one of the most profound of human emotions, love that accompanies us from puberty to old age, love that follows us from ancient times to modern, from ancient writings, through the Bible and the texts of medieval scribes to modern day books and movies. Through the millennia love has lost none of its secrecy, charm, attractiveness, craziness, even in this digital age, when we are overwhelmed by information. But what is love? Where does this emotion originate? Are we humans the only living beings feeling this emotion? Can love be explained by some chemical reactions in our brains? Is love just a trick of nature or is love some kind of higher feeling? We do not have definite answers to any of these questions, nevertheless, neuroscience, behavioral science and others have provided us with some, at least partial answers. We know today a great deal more than ever before about what is happening in the brain when we are madly in love. We understand why our hearts beat faster when we see the person we love, we know why we sweat and why we feel anxious when the loved one is away from us, and we have some ideas about how feelings of attachment form in the brain. This book guides you through the complicated labyrinth of genes, molecules and brain cells that are involved in the feelings of love, attachment, affection, and also simple sexual reproduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Levi Strauss, A.L. Gump, Yehudi Menuhin, Gertrude Stein, Adolph Sutro, Congresswoman Florence Prag Kahn--Jewish people have been so enmeshed in life in and around San Francisco that their story is a chronicle of the metropolis itself. Since the Gold Rush, Bay Area Jews have countered stereotypes, working as farmers and miners, boxers and mountaineers. They were Gold Rush pioneers, Gilded Age tycoons, and Progressive Era reformers. Told through an astonishing range of characters and events, Cosmopolitans illuminates many aspects of Jewish life in the area: the high profile of Jewish women, extraordinary achievements in the business world, the cultural creativity of the second generation, the bitter debate about the proper response to the Holocaust and Zionism, and much more. Focusing in rich detail on the first hundred years after the Gold Rush, the book also takes the story up to the present day, demonstrating how unusually strong affinities for the arts and for the struggle for social justice have characterized this community even as it has changed over time. Cosmopolitans, set in the uncommonly diverse Bay Area, is a truly unique chapter of the Jewish experience in America.
