Download or read book Rising Sun written by Aj Diaz and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the MOST RAIN DRENCHED CYBERPUNK novel of EVERMORE: CYBERPUNK FLAMES Let the sun rise on the boy and girl who would be saviors of the city and saviors of themselves! Let the sun flame on the Queen of the City who ignores propriety and prophecy as she hunts down those who. Let the sun scorch those who have visions of darker things & who have darker means. And let the sun bless those who find this story in their hands. And their eyes on the prize. Is no less than this: Eternal Flames. The good kind. Let's hope. To Hope. THIS IS THE STORY: In a ruined cyberpunk city [after the great hack!], ruled by the evil conglomerates, oilers and sheiks: Kayla, an ex-tattoo artist trying to cement her legend in the gladiator-like Games of New Eden, entertaining rich and poor alike, and an underground street racer named Jack are facing their worst demons when their worlds get turned upside-down. With powerful people out to kill them, Kayla and Jack must find the heart of the city, or die trying. And they just might be the key to RESTORING the once-thriving coin-op city. It's time to rage into the unknown of the NEON STREETS and GO DEEP into THE DEEP, yes? It all starts here. TOKENS REQUIRED. I love that I get to share this story with you. Of course, it isn't finished. This is the first of TWO BOOKS. I set out to write this book in 2021. I told myself to write a short and simple novel. And I wanted to write it fast, within one week if possible. Many thousands and thousands of words a day. Fast-paced and deadly. Well now it's 2024 and I barely put the last words to the story two or so months ago. So much for a one-week write. But I'm glad for what it's become. I lost the thread of the story time and time again and had to redraft it and redraft it. And a curious thing happened on my final draft: the story began to carry me. That's when I knew I'd found it. It was easy to begin each day. I didn't have to think - I only had to focus on finding the right words. I didn't have to write the story. I only had to find it. And everyday I wrote it was a joy. In that vein and skein and sentiment and sentimint (a sentient mint, I think), I wrote it because I love neon-drenched rain and drenched-rain streets and those sharp falling droplets pinging off of corrugated metal and all kinds of metal. And I like metal music. And I like characters who WANT THINGS BADLY. And who are willing to give their all. So. MAY YOU ENJOY. And may you RISE.LIKE THE SUN! And join the chorus of the eternal flames which are crashing down and through. Even. Right. Now.

Book Gnomon

  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2018-01-09

  • Pages : 689 pages

Download or read book Gnomon written by Nick Harkaway and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the widely acclaimed author of The Gone-Away World and Tigerman, comes a virtuosic new novel set in a near-future, high-tech surveillance state, that is equal parts dark comedy, gripping detective story, and mind-bending philosophical puzzle. "A Pynchonesque mega-novel that periodically calls to mind the films of Inception and The Matrix…. What a ride!" —The Washington Post In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of 'transparency.' Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens' thoughts and memories—all in the name of providing the safest society in history. When suspected dissident Diana Hunter dies in government custody, it marks the first time a citizen has been killed during an interrogation. The System doesn't make mistakes, but something isn't right about the circumstances surrounding Hunter's death. Mielikki Neith, a trusted state inspector and a true believer in the System, is assigned to find out what went wrong. Immersing herself in neural recordings of the interrogation, what she finds isn't Hunter but rather a panorama of characters within Hunter's psyche: a lovelorn financier in Athens who has a mystical experience with a shark; a brilliant alchemist in ancient Carthage confronting the unexpected outcome of her invention; an expat Ethiopian painter in London designing a controversial new video game, and a sociopathic disembodied intelligence from the distant future. Embedded in the memories of these impossible lives lies a code which Neith must decipher to find out what Hunter is hiding. In the static between these stories, Neith begins to catch glimpses of the real Diana Hunter—and, alarmingly, of herself. The staggering consequences of what she finds will reverberate throughout the world. A dazzling, panoramic achievement, and Nick Harkaway's most brilliant work to date, Gnomon is peerless and profound, captivating and irreverent, as it pierces through strata of reality and consciousness, and illuminates how to set a mind free. It is a truly accomplished novel from a mind possessing a matchless wit infused with a deep humanity.

Book Play Performance and Identity

Download or read book Play Performance and Identity written by Matt Omasta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Play helps define who we are as human beings. However, many of the leisurely/ludic activities people participate in are created and governed by corporate entities with social, political, and business agendas. As such, it is critical that scholars understand and explicate the ideological underpinnings of played-through experiences and how they affect the player/performers who engage in them. This book explores how people play and why their play matters, with a particular interest in how ludic experiences are often constructed and controlled by the interests of institutions, including corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, religious organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Each chapter explores diverse sites of play. From theme parks to comic conventions to massively-multiplayer online games, they probe what roles the designers of these experiences construct for players, and how such play might affect participants' identities and ideologies. Scholars of performance studies, leisure studies, media studies and sociology will find this book an essential reference when studying facets of play.

Book Jerusalem

  • Author : Gonçalo M. Tavares
  • Publisher : Dalkey Archive Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 1564785556
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Jerusalem written by Gonçalo M. Tavares and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One morning late in May, between three and six A.M., a group of lonely men and women wait to be brought together, like the elements in an equation. Ernst Spengler is about to throw himself out his window. Mylia, terminally ill and in enormous pain, goes out to visit a church. Hinnerk Obst, who's always been told by the neighborhood children that he looks like a murderer, walks the streets with a loaded gun. As these characters are manipulated and brought together, a world of violence, fear, pain, and uncertainty is portrayed, where human nature itself, and the mechanisms determining our actions, our fictions, and the elements of our imagination, are laid bare. Jerusalem is a terrifying and grimly humorous summation of the possibilities and limits of the human condition at the beginning of the 21st century." --Book Jacket.

Book I Will Survive

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book Only Forward

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Marshall Smith's surreal, groundbreaking, and award-winning debut which resonates with wild humour interlaced with dark recollections of an emotional minefield. May we introduce you to Stark. Oh, and by the way -- good luck. Stark is the private investigator who goes to work when Something Happens to you. And when a Something happens it's no good chanting 'go away go away go away' and cowering in a corner, because a Something always comes from your darkest past and won't be beaten until you face it. And that's not easy in a city where reality is twisting and broken, a world in which friends can become enemies in a heartbeat -- and where your most secret fear can become a soul-shredding reality. And the worst of it is, for this nightmare you don't even have to be asleep... Considered a modern classic, and consistently featured in lists of Books To Read Before Your Head Explodes, ONLY FORWARD is a novel you'll never forget.
