Book excerpt: Encounters between religions and the resulting questions pertaining to belief and faith are among the most intriguing subjects with which scholars grapple. How do people adjust, accommodate, resist, reinterpret and harmonize different systems of belief? Do religious conversions often mask more worldly concerns such as political power, economic well being, and the ability to control one's destiny? Specifically adopting a cross-hemispheric approach, this volume draws on experiences of religious change principally in hispanophone America, but also in anglophone and francophone America, in order to transcend cultural frontiers, illuminate the circumstances and conditions which determined the form that spiritual encounters took across the hemisphere, and encourage a comparative approach. It will prove invaluable to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics interested in anthropology, ethnohistory, the social history of religion, the history of Christianity and of missions, the history of native religions and the history of colonial America.

Book How to Talk About Spiritual Encounters

Download or read book How to Talk About Spiritual Encounters written by Peter J. Adams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a new and innovative way of understanding how language is used when people describe their spiritual and mystical encounters. Early chapters provide overviews of the nature of spiritual encounters, how commonly they occur, and the role of language. The book then develops a unique way of understanding the dynamics of talking about spirituality, using original research to support this perspective. In particular, Peter J. Adams explores how this characteristically vague way of speaking can be viewed as an intentional and not an incidental aspect of such communications because certain types of vagueness have the capacity to engage the imaginative participation of receptive listeners. This expressive vagueness is achieved by embedding missing bits, or “gaps,” in the flow of what is described and these in turn provide sites for listeners to insert their own content. Later chapters focus on practical ways people (including helping professionals) can improve their skills in talking about their spiritual encounters. All content is situated in café conversations between four people each of whom is, in their own way, concerned with the challenges they face in converting the content of their encounters into words.

Book Spiritual Encounters with Unusual Light Phenomena

Download or read book Spiritual Encounters with Unusual Light Phenomena written by Mark Fox and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Encounters with Unusual Light Phenomena: Lightforms is a study of unusual light phenomena based on almost four hundred unpublished accounts of modern-day encounters with strange lights collected over approximately thirty years. With echoes within the popular field of spiritual, religious and paranormal experience this book explores lights encountered during angelic experiences, near-death experiences and after-death communications. However, it goes much further and attempts to show that experiences of such unusual lights are cross-cultural, trans-historical and reported widely in the present day. By drawing on a large number of vivid, previously unpublished and dramatic testimonies this book demonstrates that experiences of light phenomena share to a remarkable degree a common core; typically manifested at times of crisis, overwhelmingly benign and loving, often resulting in ‘turning-points’ in the lives of those who experience them toward new spiritual and creative directions.

Book Encounters of Body and Soul in Contemporary Religious Practices

Download or read book Encounters of Body and Soul in Contemporary Religious Practices written by Anna Fedele and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists and philosophers confronted with religious phenomena have always been challenged to find a proper way to describe the spiritual experiences of the social group they were studying. The influence of the Cartesian dualism of body and mind (or soul) led to a distinction between non-material, spiritual experiences (i.e., related to the soul) and physical, mechanical experiences (i.e., related to the body). However, recent developments in medical science on the one hand and challenges to universalist conceptions of belief and spirituality on the other have resulted in “body” and “soul” losing the reassuring solid contours they had in the past. Yet, in “Western culture,” the body–soul duality is alive, not least in academic and media discourses. This volume pursues the ongoing debates and discusses the importance of the body and how it is perceived in contemporary religious faith: what happens when “body” and “soul” are un-separated entities? Is it possible, even for anthropologists and ethnographers, to escape from “natural dualism”? The contributors here present research in novel empirical contexts, the benefits and limits of the old dichotomy are discussed, and new theoretical strategies proposed.

Book Soul Mates

Download or read book Soul Mates written by Sue Minns and published by . This book was released on 2005-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of soulmates is perennially popular but the idea of "finding your soulmate" has always focused predominantly on the belief that once you've found each other, you will live happily ever after. Such a meeting can bring untold opportunities - the chance to heal wounds and resolve 'unfinished business' from past lives - as well as the soul growth and understanding to be had from liaisons which may be more difficult, but which are just as powerful and important. Some soulmates come into our lives to give us wake-up calls and the opportunity to see things differently. Sue Minns discusses the nature of the soul, explaining what exactly a soulmate is - and how to recognise one - as well as why they come into our lives when they do. She reveals how finding a soulmate can be not only an intense and unforgettable experience in its own right, but also a step on the path to opening your heart and mind, changing the way you see the world, and leading you towards a partner who is truly right for you.

Book Jung on Active Imagination

Download or read book Jung on Active Imagination written by C. G. Jung and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the creative art psychotherapies (art, dance, music, drama, poetry) can trace their roots to C. G. Jung's early work on active imagination. Joan Chodorow here offers a collection of Jung's writings on active imagination, gathered together for the first time. Jung developed this concept between the years 1913 and 1916, following his break with Freud. During this time, he was disoriented and experienced intense inner turmoil --he suffered from lethargy and fears, and his moods threatened to overwhelm him. Jung searched for a method to heal himself from within, and finally decided to engage with the impulses and images of his unconscious. It was through the rediscovery of the symbolic play of his childhood that Jung was able to reconnect with his creative spirit. In a 1925 seminar and again in his memoirs, he tells the remarkable story of his experiments during this time that led to his self-healing. Jung learned to develop an ongoing relationship with his lively creative spirit through the power of imagination and fantasies. He termed this therapeutic method "active imagination." This method is based on the natural healing function of the imagination, and its many expressions. Chodorow clearly presents the texts, and sets them in the proper context. She also interweaves her discussion of Jung's writings and ideas with contributions from Jungian authors and artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have long been aware that the encounter with Europeans affected all aspects of Native American life. But were Indians the only ones changed by these cross-cultural meetings? Might the newcomers' ways, including their religious beliefs and practices, have also been altered amid their myriad contacts with native peoples? In Encounters of the Spirit, Richard W. Pointer takes up these intriguing questions in an innovative study of the religious encounter between Indians and Euro-Americans in early America. Exploring a series of episodes across the three centuries of the colonial era and stretching from New Spain to New France and the English settlements, he finds that the flow of cultural influence was more often reciprocal than unidirectional.

Book Snapshots of the Soul

Download or read book Snapshots of the Soul written by Molly Thomasy Blasing and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snapshots of the Soul considers how photography has shaped Russian poetry from the early twentieth century to the present day. Drawing on theories of the lyric and the elegy, the social history of technology, and little-known archival materials, Molly Thomasy Blasing offers close readings of poems by Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, Joseph Brodsky, and Bella Akhmadulina, as well as by the late and post-Soviet poets Andrei Sen-Sen'kov, Arkadii Dragomoshchenko, and Kirill Medvedev, to understand their fascination with the visual language, representational power, and metaphorical possibilities offered by the camera and the photographic image. Within the context of long-standing anxieties about the threat that visual media pose to literary culture, Blasing finds that these poets were attracted to the affinities and tensions that exist between the lyric or elegy and the snapshot. Snapshots of the Soul reveals that at the core of each poet's approach to "writing the photograph" is the urge to demonstrate the superior ability of poetic language to capture and convey human experience.

Book Encounters with God in Medieval and Early Modern English Poetry

Download or read book Encounters with God in Medieval and Early Modern English Poetry written by Charlotte Clutterbuck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging with four English poems or groups of poems-the anonymous medieval Crucifixion lyrics; William Langland's Piers Plowman, John Donne's Divine Poems, and John Milton's Paradise Lost-this book examines the nature of poetic encounter with God. At the same time, the author makes original contributions to the discussion of critical dilemmas in the study of each poem or group of poems. The main linguistic focus of this book is on the nature of dialogue with God in religious poetry, an area much neglected by grammarians and often overlooked in studies of literary style. It constitutes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between literature and theology.
