Book excerpt: "Soul Data is rarely compounded--of wit and music, surface elegance and intellectual depth, quirk and quandary. Its sensual intelligence is on high alert, and the sheer unsheerness of its language--all its densities and textures--is a linguiphiliacal delight. Unmistakeably American (the poetry's occasions and its cadences alike serve for signature) it has the jinx-meister's humors about it. There's a dark streak, too, an eye for the natural indifferences that border the spotlit human heats. A fine rhetorical savvy, in a mind inclined to the chillier depths: among poetic gifts these days it's an uncommon conjunction, a gift of mysteries, like the sight (across a night pond's surface) of bright-blue shooting star: one hopes the other humans get to see it."--Heather McHugh V [Linoleum] South of Spokane Street, a gear works turns its teeth--shadows in a cavern, through the cycles of a drop-forge piston, heft themselves and recoil in a dark rain of sparks, the echo off the blocks-- pa-tang!--arriving late, repeats itself again, a ceaseless, a remorseless hammering home, a point made and lost in the patterns of work. Across the street, a hunkered stretch of houses, swing sets and cyclone fencing, a clatch of cars. The agent shrugs--"It's zoned Residential/ Light Industrial"--pa-tong! A lunatic fringe of gladiolus fronts the walkways and the rows of empty rooms we roll by at low idle.

Book The Soul of A New Machine

Download or read book The Soul of A New Machine written by Tracy Kidder and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracy Kidder's "riveting" (Washington Post) story of one company's efforts to bring a new microcomputer to market won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and has become essential reading for understanding the history of the American tech industry. Computers have changed since 1981, when The Soul of a New Machine first examined the culture of the computer revolution. What has not changed is the feverish pace of the high-tech industry, the go-for-broke approach to business that has caused so many computer companies to win big (or go belly up), and the cult of pursuing mind-bending technological innovations. The Soul of a New Machine is an essential chapter in the history of the machine that revolutionized the world in the twentieth century. "Fascinating...A surprisingly gripping account of people at work." --Wall Street Journal

Book The Holographic Soul

Download or read book The Holographic Soul written by Mike Hockney and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is your mind located? How does it interact with your body? When your body dies, does your mind die too, or does it have an afterlife? That's the mystery of existence. If humanity cannot answer these questions once and for all then it has no understanding of reality. Holography is what allows scientific materialism to be replaced by mathematical idealism. Holography allows the soul, rather than matter, to be considered the source of reality. Over 300 years ago, Leibniz, with his Monadology, adopted a holographic model of reality, whereby dimensionless monads created the illusion of the dimensional material world. The answer to existence has always been right in front of humanity – in the shape of mathematics. The spacetime universe of matter is nothing but an ontological hologram that comes inbuilt with mathematical forcefields that lend it the illusion of being solid. It's all in the math. Everything starts with unextended minds = dimensionless Fourier singularities = mathematical souls.

  • Publisher : Springer

  • ISBN : 3319397567
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Uncertainty written by William Briggs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a philosophical approach to probability and probabilistic thinking, considering the underpinnings of probabilistic reasoning and modeling, which effectively underlie everything in data science. The ultimate goal is to call into question many standard tenets and lay the philosophical and probabilistic groundwork and infrastructure for statistical modeling. It is the first book devoted to the philosophy of data aimed at working scientists and calls for a new consideration in the practice of probability and statistics to eliminate what has been referred to as the "Cult of Statistical Significance." The book explains the philosophy of these ideas and not the mathematics, though there are a handful of mathematical examples. The topics are logically laid out, starting with basic philosophy as related to probability, statistics, and science, and stepping through the key probabilistic ideas and concepts, and ending with statistical models. Its jargon-free approach asserts that standard methods, such as out-of-the-box regression, cannot help in discovering cause. This new way of looking at uncertainty ties together disparate fields — probability, physics, biology, the “soft” sciences, computer science — because each aims at discovering cause (of effects). It broadens the understanding beyond frequentist and Bayesian methods to propose a Third Way of modeling.

Book The Soul of Theological Anthropology

Download or read book The Soul of Theological Anthropology written by Joshua R. Farris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research in the philosophy of religion, anthropology, and philosophy of mind has prompted the need for a more integrated, comprehensive, and systematic theology of human nature. This project constructively develops a theological accounting of human persons by drawing from a Cartesian (as a term of art) model of anthropology, which is motivated by a long tradition. As was common among patristics, medievals, and Reformed Scholastics, Farris draws from philosophical resources to articulate Christian doctrine as he approaches theological anthropology. Exploring a substance dualism model, the author highlights relevant theological texts and passages of Scripture, arguing that this model accounts for doctrinal essentials concerning theological anthropology. While Farris is not explicitly interested in thorough critique of materialist ontology, he notes some of the significant problems associated with it. Rather, the present project is an attempt to revitalize the resources found in Cartesianism by responding to some common worries associated with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large and successful organizations seem to emulate the trajectory of a skipping stone. First they slow, and then they sink. Why does this happen over and over again? Most organizations come to believe that their problems stem from doing the wrong things. They are unfortunately looking in the wrong place. The problem with the demise of large and successful organizations is not related to what they are doing. The problem is rather in what they have actually become. And they simply fail to see it. It is only in understanding "who we are" that the sinking trajectory of large and successful organizations can be reversed. Mind-Head Soul-Head addresses this insidious situation and provides a "human prescription" as the cure.
