Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a year into a bitter cold and dark volcanic winter, a small group of survivors decide to abandon a desolate northern megalopolis. But, even before the volcanic eruptions, the World’s population is vastly diminished. Endless economic crises, perpetual civil wars, political unrest of global proportions, frequent pandemics and years of famine take their toll by millions. The eruptions came after all of it, threatening to erase humankind from the face of the Earth. In the end, there is no government left of any kind, nor society, nor laws to obey or rules to follow. The Earth is dark, cold and barren as the sun is unable to penetrate through the dense ash clouds. Fed up by the constant clashes with other survivors, fighting over access to food, water, fuel, shelter and, always in fear of yet another enemy, common to them all — residual units of government special forces, genetically engineered semi–human soldiers called Pongos — they decide to head South in hopes of finding safety and peace. On their journey across the continent their faction of twenty-seven gradually grows to more than four hundred. Most of those that join are small children, teenagers, and occasionally young adults. With this, their purpose gradually transforms from one of mere survival to one in which their existence becomes a pledge to preserve humanity and set the grounds for a new civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having spent years together in the military, a group of men became close friends. Although they have seen the good and the bad throughout their careers, they all share an ideal— in some situations, quick and direct action was necessary. As retirement neared, these men came up with an idea and formulated a plan. Backed with experience and passion, they enthusiastically formed a clandestine organization made to take care of unstable situations before they fell apart. Despite being based in the U.S., they didn’t have the sanction or backing of the government and country they are aiming to protect. In the beginning, they used unofficial ties and funding, but they were all aware that such support would not last forever. In a bold move designed to make them independent of outside help, the organization stepped out of the shadows to operate as a legitimate private security company while still secretly maintaining their original organization. Things ran smoothly for a while, but the heads of the corporation knew they needed to plan for the future against the inevitable competition for big contracts. So they put into action a plan with the potential to change the face of war and science—forever. With secret plans and risky moves, the group must be careful in handling their newest project, or they may lose control of what could be the world’s most dangerous weapons.

Book excerpt: The Angel’s Lamp, set in war-torn Ireland just after the Easter Rising, centers around a love affair between Johnny Flynn, an Irish-bred, English staff-sergeant in charge of the rebellion's soon-to-be executed leaders, and Nora Connolly, the firebrand daughter of James Connolly, the uprising’s charismatic leader. Johnny meets Nora while standing guard over her soon-to-be executed father and is struck by her determination to take the fight to the British. But then, unknown to Nora and under the threat of death Johnny is unexpectedly summoned to serve on the firing squad that executes Connolly. Ridden with guilt after the execution and feeling a traitor to his heritage given all he has seen and done, Johnny deserts the British Army, joins the ragtag Irish rebels, and soon crosses paths with Nora. The story that follows culminates in an fiery emotional conflict between Johnny and Nora that pits the possibilities of love against the unyielding obstacles to forgiveness.

Book Postal services in Scotland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Scottish Affairs Committee
  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2011-01-09
  • ISBN : 9780215555830
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Postal services in Scotland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Scottish Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-01-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report considers two key issues: the maintenance of a universal service and the continuation of a sustainable Post Office network across Scotland. The report welcomes assurances that Scotland would not be made exempt from the universal service obligation. Further clarification is needed on Ofcom's power to designate more than one universal service provider. Ofcom should be required to consult with consumers, small businesses and vulnerable users in remote, rural and island communities in Scotland before it recommends any changes to the existing USO. There are considerable advantages to a long, stable and robust relationship between Royal Mail Group and Post Office Ltd and the Committee recommends that a ten year Inter Business Agreement should be reached prior to any sale of Royal Mail. On the Post Office network, the Bill makes no provision for the number of Post Offices and does not set out criteria for access to the network, a matter of concern because the current criteria could be met by 7,500 branches rather than the existing 11,500 branches. This could lead to many closures in Scotland. The Committee recommends that the Government gives assurances to preserving the existing network of branches. Elements of Outreach Post Offices, which replaced 102 Post Office branches in rural and remote parts of Scotland, are not sufficiently robust or reliable to provide an adequate service, according to the Committee, and it fears the new Post Office Local risks downgrading the service further. Improvements should be delivered as a matter of urgency.

Book excerpt: A Richard and Judy Book Club pick, If I Let You Go is a darkly comic tale of searing loss, coercive control and the consequences of taking the wrong path. 'Simultaneously tragic and uplifting . . . Charlotte Levin is SUCH a clever writer' - Ruth Jones, author of Love Untold Every morning, Janet Brown goes to work cleaning offices. It calms her – cleanliness, neatness. All the things she’s unable to do with her soul can be achieved with a damp cloth and a splash of bleach. However the guilt she still carries, about a devastating loss that happened eleven years ago, cannot be erased. When Janet finds herself involved in a train crash, she recognizes her chance to do what she couldn’t all those years ago. And she makes a decision. As news spreads of Janet’s actions, her story inspires everyone around her and, for the first time, her life has purpose. Her future is filled with hope. But Janet's story isn't quite what it seems. And, as events spiral out of control, she soon discovers that coming clean isn't an option. Because if Janet washes away the lies, what long-buried truths will she finally have to face? If I Let You Go by Charlotte Levin is a deeply moving and compelling portrayal of a woman coming to terms with loss.
