Book excerpt: Salome was raised in a fundamentalist community. She is being courted by the head of the church and has done little more than hold his hand as prescribed by their rules. She wears their uniform on her body and obeys their rules with all her heart, terrified that any deviation will cause the loss of her salvation. She had been taught from the moment her breasts began to grow that she needed to hide the things away that may make men desire her. Men were hapless; they reacted to a woman's wiles despite their desire for goodness and the quest for modesty and sobriety rested solely in her hands. She denies everything carnal that simmers within her and succumbs to manipulation and control that borders on abuse.A chance meeting throws her into the world of the Nephilim where she meets a half demon named Braith who is the opposite of everything she has been taught. He is beautiful, powerful and empowering. He sweeps Salome off her feet and shows her that the line between good and evil is sometimes blurred. She yearns to be free from her community and the indoctrination of her strict upbringing and considers joining his coven of half demon warriors who are about to embark on a war against their evil brethren. But that would mean becoming an immortal and equally powerful "Daughter of the Night" and this would bring a whole new set of challenges.Soothsayer is Book 1 of a 5 part series but can be read as a stand alone.FROM THE AUTHOR: Soothsayer tackles fundamentalist thinking and every woman who has ever felt sympathy for a female raised in a patriarchal system will love the liberation of the main character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Untold Futures, J. K. Barret locates models for recovering the variety of futures imagined within some of our most foundational literature. These poems, plays, and prose fictions reveal how Renaissance writers embraced uncertain potential to think about their own present moment and their own place in time. The history of the future that Barret reconstructs looks beyond futures implicitly dismissed as impossible or aftertimes defined by inevitability and fixed perspective. Chapters on Philip Sidney’s Old Arcadia, Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, Antony and Cleopatra, and Cymbeline, and John Milton’s Paradise Lost trace instead a persistent interest in an indeterminate, earthly future evident in literary constructions that foreground anticipation and expectation. Barret argues that the temporal perspectives embedded in these literary texts unsettle some of our most familiar points of reference for the period by highlighting an emerging cultural self-consciousness capable of registering earthly futures predicated on the continued sameness of time rather than radical ruptures in it. Rather than mapping a particular future, these writers generate imaginative access to a range of futures. Barret makes a strong case for the role of language itself in emerging conceptualizations of temporality.

Book The Sibylline Oracles

Download or read book The Sibylline Oracles written by Milton S. Terry and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of almost 10.000 words about the oracles in religion * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices THE Sibyls occupy a conspicuous place in the traditions and history of ancient Greece and Rome. Their fame was spread abroad long before the beginning of the Christian era. Heraclitus of Ephesus, five centuries before Christ, compared himself to the Sibyl "who, speaking with inspired mouth, without a smile, without ornament, and without perfume, penetrates through centuries by the power of the gods." The ancient traditions vary in reporting the number and the names of these weird prophetesses, and much of what has been handed down to us is legendary. But whatever opinion one may hold respecting the various legends, there can be little doubt that a collection of Sibylline Oracles was at one time preserved at Rome. There are, moreover, various oracles, purporting to have been written by ancient Sibyls, found in the writings of Pausanias, Plutarch, Livy, and in other Greek and Latin authors. Whether any of these citations formed a portion of the Sibylline books once kept in Rome we cannot now determine; but the Roman capitol was destroyed by fire in the time of Sulla (B. C. 84), and again in the time of Vespasian (A. D. 69), and whatever books were at those dates kept therein doubtless perished in the flames. It is said by some of the ancients that a subsequent collection of oracles was made, but, if so, there is now no certainty that any fragments of them remain.

Book excerpt: The sixth Chosen One of ancient prophesy is now walking earth as an unknown woman living a normal life. When her channel opens, however, Varahn suddenly faces the reality that heaven exists, and her ordinary life is upended. Varahn is told she’s been “chosen" by the Holy Spirit to protect earth from a total extinction of life. Varahn knows human activities are already rushing earth to ecological and climate catastrophe. The process of extinction is actively underway. Although she cherishes her home, she's completely overwhelmed to think such an urgent and momentous responsibility would depend upon her. Is this real? How can she possibly reverse this trajectory? Varahn’s every day felt experience is of earth. But once she's chosen, a heavenly split of her consciousness appears at the center of the homeomorphic hologram, asleep in the very place last occupied by the Absolute God of the Hebrew Torah and the Christian Old Testament. Others in heaven mistakenly conclude Varahn must be Absolute Goddess, seeking to control All That Is. They attack her pre-emptively in ways that threaten to make her crucial task impossible. Jesus of Nazareth is profoundly concerned for both Varahn and the healing of earth. When a disbelieving Varahn decides to start a diary soon after her channel opens, Jesus recognizes that despite it being perceived as a fantasy, should He and the Holy Spirit channel back to Varahn the heavenly view of her story, Varahn might be convinced that she has in fact been chosen, and be fully empowered for her task. In Varahn’s remarkable transcription of channeled truths and personal experience, Jesus also sees an extraordinary opportunity to share his own heartfelt sense of his historical role on earth, as well as future hopes for his teachings.
