Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the summer of 1898. The nation, just coming out of an economic slump, has been at war with Spain since April. Sylvester Tilghman, sheriff of Arahpot, Jordan County, Pennsylvania, and his friend, Dr. Hiram Mariner are called to Reliance Colliery, which is owned by Nathan Zimmerman, the new burgess of Arahpot. Five miners have been trapped overnight by a cave-in. When rescuers broke through, Willis Petry was discovered dead and Claude Kessler was standing over him with a knife in hand. Tilghman is informed there was bad blood between the two men. Kessler swears he didn¿t kill Petry. Examination reveals the victim wasn¿t stabbed. He ingested ground glass, which is found in remnants of sandwiches in his lunch pail. But Mariner determines cause of death was spice cake laced with cowbane, a poisonous plant. Petry had married a widow with two children, a surly teen and a mute child. Suspicion, naturally, falls on the widow. The stepdaughter confesses she put the glass in the sandwich because she didn't like the man's treatment of her mother (there's another, darker reason for her act). But both deny putting any spice cake in Petry's lunch. Petry is a man with a checkered past. Tilghman learns he had been a pimp previously and was currently operating a gambling den on the side. Kessler declines to explain the bad blood between him and Petry. He admits to gambling with Petry, but has always come out on the winning side. Syl¿s life is further complicated when a band of German gypsies, known in Pennsylvania as Chi-kaners, arrive and seek his help. Contrary to the myth of gypsies stealing children, they claim one of their young women was stolen by a goryo (non-gypsy). His name? Willis Petry. Add in threats to Syl's job by the manipulations of McLean Ruppenthal, the former burgess; a run in with a female horse thief; the murder of a local barber; scary predictions by a gypsy fortuneteller; the shooting of Deputy Cyrus Gutshall after he successfully competes in a July 4 foot-race, and a cross country chase after the villain steals Doc's new motorcar. There's plenty of good eating, church-going and socializing along the way. And, before all is over, Sylvester may come closer to his goal of finally marrying longtime girlfriend Lydia Longlow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-three American women have participated in cross-country skiing in the Winter Olympics between the years of 1972 and 2018. In 2018, forty-six years after the first team competed, Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall won Olympic gold in the Team Sprint, in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the first Olympic medal for U.S. women's cross-country skiing. Five decades of women skiers stood up and cheered, celebrating this long sought after achievement. This book shares the collective journey of these women Olympians, with the skiers themselves telling the story. Part I combines individual stories along a variety of themes, to collectively demonstrate the challenges of competing against the best in the world. In Part II, virtually every one of the fifty-three wrote her own profile to describe her skiing career and post-Olympic life. Photographs throughout put faces with the stories and add vibrancy to the narrative. The anecdotes in Trail to Gold: The Journey of 53 Women Skiers, paint the picture of women's cross-country skiing over 50 years--a fascinating history recorded in personal heartbreak and triumph and in fun vignettes from life on the trail.

Book Good Money Part II

Download or read book Good Money Part II written by F. A. Hayek and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of this collection presents five articles that lay the foundation for some of the Nobel Prize–winning economists most controversial ideas. The two volumes of Good Money present a comprehensive chronicle of F.A. Hayek’s writings on monetary policy. Together, they offer readers an invaluable reference to some of his most profound thoughts about money. Good Money, Part II: The Standard offers five more of Hayek’s articles that advance his ideas about money. In these essays, Hayek investigates the consequences of the “predicament of composition.” This principle works on the premise that the entire society cannot simultaneously increase liquidity by selling property or services for cash. This analysis led Hayek to make what was perhaps his most controversial proposal: that governments should be denied a monopoly on the coining of money. “One of the great thinkers of our age who . . . revolutionized the world’s intellectual and political life.” —Former President George Herbert Walker Bush
