Download or read book The Son Also Rises written by Gregory Clark and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How much of our fate is tied to the status of our parents and grandparents? How much does this influence our children? More than we wish to believe! While it has been argued that rigid class structures have eroded in favor of greater social equality, The Son Also Rises proves that movement on the social ladder has changed little over eight centuries. Using a novel technique -- tracking family names over generations to measure social mobility across countries and periods -- renowned economic historian Gregory Clark reveals that mobility rates are lower than conventionally estimated, do not vary across societies, and are resistant to social policies. The good news is that these patterns are driven by strong inheritance of abilities and lineage does not beget unwarranted advantage. The bad news is that much of our fate is predictable from lineage. Clark argues that since a greater part of our place in the world is predetermined, we must avoid creating winner-take-all societies."--Jacket.

Download or read book Eadric the Grasper Sons of Mercia Vol 1 written by Jayden Woods and published by Jayden Woods. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History looks back on Eadric Streona as one of the most villainous men of his time. The BBC History Magazine elected him as the worst Englishman of the 11th century, and many also blame him for the victory of the Vikings over England. Streona means "the grasper," and such was Eadric's character: he clutched for power and money wherever he could. But what most historians fail to consider is that Eadric Streona's primary goal was peace and stability for England. Without contradicting the known facts, "Eadric the Grasper" presents another conception of this historical figure: he is suave, charming, intelligent, and values peace above all things. If he must put a Viking king on the throne to gain a pleasurable life for himself and his true love, so be it. Meanwhile, a ruthless vigilante called "the Golden Cross" will do anything necessary to keep the Vikings from the throne. Eadric must pit his wits and sword against the crafty masked figure, but doing so traps him in a dark web of lies and deception. When at last he uncovers the rebel's identity, his entire world will fall apart, and he must face a terrible choice. Can the selfish Eadric Streona sacrifice his own welfare for the sake of another's? Fans of Bernard Cornwell, Georgette Heyer, Ken Follet ("Pillars of the Earth"), and Baroness Orczy ("The Scarlet Pimpernel") will especially enjoy the style of this swashbuckling historical fiction.

Download or read book THE MAHABHARATA written by Ramesh Menon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata is the more recent of India's two great epics, and by far the longer. First composed by the Maharishi Vyasa in verse, it has come down the centuries in the timeless oral tradition of guru and sishya, profoundly influencing the history, culture, and art of not only the Indian subcontinent but most of south-east Asia. At 100,000 couplets, it is seven times as long as the Iliad and the Odyssey combined: far and away the greatest recorded epic known to man. The Mahabharata is the very Book of Life: in its variety, majesty and, also, in its violence and tragedy. It has been said that nothing exists that cannot be found within the pages of this awesome legend. The epic describes a great war of some 5000 years ago, and the events that led to it. The war on Kurukshetra sees ten million warriors slain, brings the dwapara yuga to an end, and ushers in a new and sinister age: this present kali yuga, modern times. At the heart of the Mahabharata nestles the Bhagavad Gita, the Song of God. Senayor ubhayor madhye, between two teeming armies, Krishna expounds the eternal dharma to his warrior of light, Arjuna. At one level, all the restless action of the Mahabharata is a quest for the Gita and its sacred stillness. After the carnage, it is the Gita that survives, immortal lotus floating upon the dark waters of desolation: the final secret! With its magnificent cast of characters, human, demonic, and divine, and its riveting narrative, the Mahabharata continues to enchant readers and scholars the world over. This new rendering brings the epic to the contemporary reader in sparkling modern prose. It brings alive all the excitement, magic, and grandeur of the original-for our times.
Download or read book The Book of Jasher written by J. H. Parry and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believed by some to have been the original beginning of the Old Testament, The Book of Jasher has been suppressed and rediscovered numerous times since its initial translation from the Hebrew in AD 800. Referred to in Joshua and Second Samuel, this apocryphal book of the Bible expands upon some of the stories we know so well: we meet Cain and Abel's three sisters, are privy to a more detailed account of the awful circumstances of the Great Flood and Noah's conduct toward the multitudes who assembled before his ark, and learn more about the women of the Bible. Jasher's version of the story of Abraham is considered by many to be the most beautiful as this new perspective on the Old Testament will inspire believers and intrigue readers of ancient literature.

Download or read book The Book of Jasher written by Albinus Alcuin and published by Book Tree. This book was released on 2000 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to some sources, this book was once the original start of the Bible. We do know at one time that it was once part of the Bible, being referred to in Joshua and Second Samuel. It also survived the burning of the Alexandria Library in about 389 AD due to a fast acting custodian. Albinus Alcuin later found this work and did the original translation of it from Hebrew in 800 AD. It was later suppressed but rediscovered in 1829, when it was once again suppressed. Only now has it reemerged to become widely available and judged properly for its value. Note: A more common 64 page version is in circulation, but is a proven forgery.

Download or read book The Books of Enoch written by R. H. Charles and published by St. Martin's Essentials. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of three key "lost" books of the bible, offering insight into the origins of early Christianity. In the early days of the Christian faith there were many writings, only some of which became part of the canonical Bible. But what of the other books, known as apocryphal texts...which of those are worth reading? One of the most influential and well-known of these apocryphal texts is The Books of Enoch, a collection of three ancient Hebrew texts that contain teachings about angels, demons, the great flood, as well as mystical prophecies. This collection also includes two other important apocryphal books. The Book of Jasher, meaning “upright” or “righteous” describes the world’s creation up until Moses’ death and is referenced throughout the Hebrew bible. The Book of Jubilees is an ancient Jewish religious text that offers a retelling of the books of Genesis and Exodus. Compiled together for modern readers, these three apocryphal texts offer insight into the origins of early Christianity. Readers will discover new details, narratives, and perspectives that will interest, and even challenge, modern readers. Together, these books provide a historical framework for readers interested in expanding their knowledge of biblical heritage.
