Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this history of the black peasants of Amazonia, Oscar de la Torre focuses on the experience of African-descended people navigating the transition from slavery to freedom. He draws on social and environmental history to connect them intimately to the natural landscape and to Indigenous peoples. Relying on this world as a repository for traditions, discourses, and strategies that they retrieved especially in moments of conflict, Afro-Brazilians fought for autonomous communities and developed a vibrant ethnic identity that supported their struggles over labor, land, and citizenship. Prior to abolition, enslaved and escaped blacks found in the tropical forest a source for tools, weapons, and trade--but it was also a cultural storehouse within which they shaped their stories and records of confrontations with slaveowners and state authorities. After abolition, the black peasants' knowledge of local environments continued to be key to their aspirations, allowing them to maintain relationships with powerful patrons and to participate in the protest cycle that led Getulio Vargas to the presidency of Brazil in 1930. In commonly referring to themselves by such names as "sons of the river," black Amazonians melded their agro-ecological traditions with their emergent identity as political stakeholders.
Download or read book Crossing the River written by Carol Smith and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful exploration of grief and resilience following the death of the author's son that combines memoir, reportage, and lessons in how to heal Everyone deals with grief in their own way. Helen Macdonald found solace in training a wild goshawk. Cheryl Strayed found strength in hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. For Carol Smith, a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist struggling with the sudden death of her seven-year-old son, Christopher, the way to cross the river of sorrow was through work. In Crossing the River, Smith recounts how she faced down her crippling loss through reporting a series of profiles of people coping with their own intense challenges, whether a life-altering accident, injury, or diagnosis. These were stories of survival and transformation, of people facing devastating situations that changed them in unexpected ways. Smith deftly mixes the stories of these individuals and their families with her own account of how they helped her heal. General John Shalikashvili, once the most powerful member of the American military, taught Carol how to face fear with discipline and endurance. Seth, a young boy with a rare and incurable illness, shed light on the totality of her son's experiences, and in turn helps readers see that the value of a life is not measured in days. Crossing the River is a beautiful and profoundly moving book, an unforgettable journey through grief toward hope, and a valuable, illuminating read for anyone coping with loss.

Download or read book Home Waters written by John N. Maclean and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Beautiful. ... A lyrical companion to his father’s classic, A River Runs through It, chronicling their family’s history and bond with Montana’s Blackfoot River.” —Washington Post A "poetic" and "captivating" (Publishers Weekly) memoir about the power of place to shape generations, Home Waters is John N. Maclean's remarkable chronicle of his family's century-long love affair with Montana's majestic Blackfoot River, the setting for his father's classic novella, A River Runs through It. Maclean returns annually to the simple family cabin that his grandfather built by hand, still in search of the trout of a lifetime. When he hooks it at last, decades of longing promise to be fulfilled, inspiring John, reporter and author, to finally write the story he was born to tell. A book that will resonate with everyone who feels deeply rooted to a landscape, Home Waters is a portrait of a family who claimed a river, from one generation to the next, of how this family came of age in the 20th century and later as they scattered across the country, faced tragedy and success, yet were always drawn back to the waters that bound them together. Here are the true stories behind the beloved characters fictionalized in A River Runs through It, including the Reverend Maclean, the patriarch who introduced the family to fishing; Norman, who balanced a life divided between literature and the tug of the rugged West; and tragic yet luminous Paul (played by Brad Pitt in Robert Redford’s film adaptation), whose mysterious death has haunted the family and led John to investigate his uncle’s murder and reveal new details in these pages. A universal story about nature, family, and the art of fly fishing, Maclean’s memoir beautifully captures the inextricable ways our personal histories are linked to the places we come from—our home waters. Featuring twelve wood engravings by Wesley W. Bates and a map of the Blackfoot River region.

Download or read book Transforming Literacy Curriculum Genres written by Christine C. Pappas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, university researchers and urban elementary teacher-researchers coauthor chapters on the teachers' year-long inquiries, on a range of literacy topics that they conducted as part of a collaborative school-university action research project. Central to this project was the teacher-researchers' attempts to transform their teaching practices to meet the needs of students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, and their finding that their inquiry efforts resulted in developing more collaborative styles of teaching. Because the everyday interactions between teachers and students are realized by the social talk in the classroom, the university- and teacher-researchers analyzed classroom discourse to study and document the teachers' efforts to make changes in the locus of power in literacy teaching and learning. The chapters include many classroom discourse examples to illustrate the critical points or incidents of these teachers' inquiries. They show the successes and the struggles involved in shedding teacher-controlled patterns of talk. This book explores the process of urban teachers' journeys to create dialogically organized literacy instruction in particular literacy routines--called, in this book, curriculum genres. The book is organized in terms of these curriculum genres, such as writing curriculum genres, reading-aloud curriculum genres, drama curriculum genres, and so forth. Teacher inquiries were conducted in various elementary grade levels, from kindergarten through grade eight. Three occurred in bilingual classrooms and one in a special education classroom. The first and last chapters, written by the editors, provide the background, theoretical, and methodological underpinnings of the project.
Download or read book The Earth and the Sons of Men written by Kenneth A. Faminu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-29 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book The Earth and the Sons of Men is lucid and laconic, very easy to read and to understand. It is full of intrigues, suspense, and character manipulation. It is really a religious fiction of the highest order. The author carefully arranges and perfectly rearranges it as to appear mysterious. In the beginning, the creatures of the Creator like the Earth, the Sky, the Moon, the Stars, the Ocean, the Sea, the Day, and the Night are personified as if they are beings. Mother Earth accuses the sons of men of so many vices ranging from warmongering to rumormongering, adultery, idolatry, rape, assassination, jealousy, and arrogance. She therefore warns them and promises that if they (sons of men) fail to desist from these acts of wickedness, she would report them to their Creator. The sons of men turned deaf ears to Mother Earths advice and committed injustice to humanity and other creatures like the Ocean, Sea, Day, Night, Stars, and Rivers. The only creature the son of man could not mess with is the Sun because of its distance and ferocity. Hence, Mother Earth called other creatures and briefs them on the atrocities sons of men are perpetuating on her (Earth). The authors personification of these creatures makes the whole scenario so fearful when you read and picture the catalogue of sons of mens wickedness enumerated by the Earth. Mother Earth carefully informed the creatures that the sons of men are so arrogant and incorrigible that they refuse to agree that they are evil and are perpetuating evil; she therefore begged and urged these creatures to join her to report these arrogant sons of men to their Creator. She seriously implored them to be her witnesses before their Creator (God). These creatures agreed to be Mother Earths witnesses because they confess the sons of men have committed so many atrocities not only to Mother Earth, but also to Ocean, Sky, Sea, Rivers, Night, Day, and even the Moon. The systematic religious arrangement and relevant biblical quotations to back the accusations against sons of men show the deep knowledge of the scripture by the author. Mother Earth requests an appointment with God through Jesus Christ in order to present her case. The author deeply involves Jesus Christ as an authentic witness of Mother Earth during the crucial meeting with God, the Creator. Mother Earth, the Ocean, Sea, the Sky, the Day, the Night, the Stars, the Rivers, and the sons of men met with God on the appointed day and at the appointed place to present their cases. The Creator listens very well; he apportions blame to the sons of men and congratulates Mother Earth. The author gradually ameliorates the tension of sharp and logical argument between sons of men and Mother Earth so that the reader could catch his or her breath to be able to see the facts, the reasoning, and the lessons in the book by allowing God to intervene as his final judgment. While God accepts that he created sons of men to be the rulers of all things on Mother Earth, he disapproves the acts of wickedness, arrogance, belligerence, and immorality of sons of men. The Creators philosophical conclusion makes me shudder and tremble when he pacified Mother Earth and said, My spirit will not be with the sons of men because of their wickedness, you may wish to know that the sons of men are mere dust, they are taken out from you and to you they will return. The lessons to be learned from this book are many: that men should be free from every kind of wickedness, evil greed, depravity, envy, civil strife, deceit, malice, gossip, slander, God hating, insolence, arrogance, and boasting. How memorable will it be according to the wish of the author if some of our young actors and actresses could come together to make a film out of this bookusing voice-over on the creation. Dr. T. George, MD
