Book excerpt: Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence Sons and Lovers is a novel by D.H. Lawrence set in late 19th century England and tells the story of a man so emotionally connected and influenced by his mother that he is unable to form lasting relationships when he meets other women. In the first part of the story, the well-bred Gertrude Coppard falls in love with Walter Morel, a poor coal miner. The couple marries, and Gertrude struggles to adjust to reduced circumstances on a meager salary in a rented house. The couple drift apart and she gradually transfers her affection to her boys, starting with William, her eldest. Walter Morel begins retreating to the pub after working with the other miners. William goes out into the world and begins to rise to the middle class. When he dies, Gertrude shifts her affection to her second son, Paul, rediscovering her deep love for the boy after surviving a severe bout of pneumonia. In the second part of the novel, Paul struggles between the comfort and stability provided by his mother and her need to venture out and experience her own romantic love. He begins a romance with Miriam, a girl from his church. They appear to be well matched, but Paul's mother looks down on Miriam, which complicates the relationship. She is far below her social standing and she comes from an even poorer family. Paul then meets Clara Dawes, a more sophisticated young woman who has separated from her husband. Paul leaves Miriam behind as he spends more and more time with Clara. But in the end, not even Clara can compete with Gertrude's affections, and Paul leaves Clara and returns to her mother. When she dies, he is left alone.

Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece, tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and budding artist. Richard Aldington explains the semi-autobiographical nature of his masterpiece: When you have experienced Sons and Lovers you have lived through the agonies of the young Lawrence striving to win free from his old life'. Generally, it is not only considered as an evocative portrayal of working-class life in a mining community, but also an intense study of family, class and early sexual relationships.

Book excerpt: Though D. H. Lawrence's third published novel, Sons and Lovers (1913) is largely autobiographical. The novel, which began as "Paul Morel," was sparked by the death of Lawrence's mother, Lydia. Lawrence reexamined his childhood, his relationship with his mother, and her psychological effect on his sexuality. The roots of Sons and Lovers are clearly located in Lawrence's life. His childhood coal-mining town of Eastwood was changed, with a sardonic twist, to Bestwood. Walter Morel was modeled on Lawrence's hard-drinking, irresponsible collier father, Arthur. Lydia became Gertrude Morel, the intellectually stifled, unhappy mother who lives through her sons. The death by erysipelas of one of Lawrence's elder brothers, Ernest, and Lydia's grief and eventual obsession with Lawrence, seems hardly changed in the novel. (Both Ernest and his fictional counterpart, William, were engaged to London stenographers named Louisa "Gipsy" Denys.)Filling out the cast of important characters was Jessie Chambers, a neighbor with whom Lawrence developed an intense friendship, and who would become Miriam Leiver in the novel. His mother and family disapproved of their relationship, which always seemed on the brink of romance. Nevertheless, Chambers was Lawrence's greatest literary supporter in his early years, and he frequently showed her drafts of what he was working on, including Sons and Lovers (she disliked her depiction, and it led to the dissolution of their relationship). Lawrence's future wife, Frieda von Richtofen Weekly, partially inspired the portrait of Clara Dawes, the older, sensual woman with whom Paul has an affair. To be fair, Lawrence met Frieda only in 1912 at Nottingham University College, and he started "Paul Morel" in 1910.Considered Lawrence's first masterpiece, most critics of the day praised Sons and Lovers for its authentic treatment of industrial life and sexuality. There is evidence that Lawrence was aware of Sigmund Freud's early theories on sexuality, and Sons and Lovers deeply explores and revises of one of Freud's major theories, the Oedipus complex. (Lawrence would go on to write more works on psychoanalysis in the 1920s.) Still, the book received some criticism from those who felt the author had gone too far in his description of Paul's confused sexuality. Compared to his later works, however, such as The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover, Sons and Lovers seems quite modest.

Estranged from her husband, Mrs. Morel takes comfort in her four children, especially her sons. Her oldest son, William, is her favorite, and she is very upset when he takes a job in London and moves away from the family. When William sickens and dies a few years later, she is crushed, not even noticing the rest of her children until she almost loses Paul, her second son, as well. They carry on a very intimate, but purely platonic, relationship for many years. Mrs. Morel does not approve of Miriam, and this may be the main reason that Paul does not marry her. He constantly wavers in his feelings toward her.Paul meets Clara Dawes, a suffragette who is separated from her husband, through Miriam. As he becomes closer with Clara and they begin to discuss his relationship with Miriam, she tells him that he should consider consummating their love and he returns to Miriam to see how she feels.Paul and Miriam sleep together and are briefly happy, but shortly afterward Paul decides that he does not want to marry Miriam, and so he breaks off with her. She still feels that his soul belongs to her, and, in part agrees reluctantly. He realizes that he loves his mother most, however. After breaking off his relationship with Miriam, Paul begins to spend more time with Clara and they begin an extremely passionate affair. However, she does not want to divorce her husband Baxter, and so they can never be married. Paul's mother falls ill and he devotes much of his time to caring for her. When she finally dies, he is broken-hearted and, after a final plea from Miriam, goes off alone at the end of the novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 - 2 March 1930) was an important and controversial English writer of the 20th century, whose prolific and diverse output included novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour. Lawrence's unsettling opinions earned him many enemies and he endured hardships, official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage." At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, the influential Cambridge critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness, placing much of Lawrence's fiction within the canonical "great tradition" of the English novel. He is now generally valued as a visionary thinker and a significant representative of modernism in English literature, although some feminists object to the attitudes toward women and sexuality found in his works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel pulls a real bait-and-switch on us, folks. First, it's all, "Welcome to the life story of William Morel." Then, bam: "Oh wait, make that the life of Paul Morel, the sensitive artist boy who has to take over the role of lead character when William dies unexpectedly." Okay, now that that's been established...Published in 1913, Sons and Lovers made it all the way to 9th on the Modern Library's 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century list, narrowly beating out The Grapes of Wrath (take that, Steinbeck). Many people believe that Sons is D.H. Lawrence's best book. That's saying a lot, because this is the same guy who wrote Women in Love, Lady Chatterley's Lover, and other masterworks. So, we bet you're guessing that Sons and Lovers incited a lot of immediate standing ovations when it was published. Right? Wrong. The initial reception of the book was actually a bit ho-hum.The only real talk the book created at the time of its publication arose from critics who called Lawrence obscene for talking openly about sex--gasp. But hey, a lot of people still read Sons and Lovers today. The moral is: don't worry so much about naysayers, especially if you write a book whose themes may be a bit "before their time."Despite being fictionalized, this book is semi-autobiographical. The story centers on the admiration and love that Paul Morel has for his mother, Gertrude--a great woman who ruins her life by marrying a coal miner named Walter Morel, who turns out to be an abusive boozehound.Lawrence's mother was also the wife of a pretty lousy coal miner. And Lawrence always felt bad about his mother's wasted potential. So we're guessing this book was kind of cathartic for him.But wait a second. Sons and Lovers tells the tale of a young man who hates his father and wants to possess his mother all for himself... Doesn't that sound familiar? You got it; this novel is heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud's concept of the Oedipus Complex. We know, we know, Freud put a lot of ideas out there. But the Oedipus Complex is the one about how little boys want to kill their fathers and sleep with their mothers, because their relationships with their moms are, like, their framework for understanding everything else in the world. That all might sound crazy at first. But if you accept the Oedipus Complex as a thing, and then you pay attention to the amount of times Sons and Lovers compares Paul and Mrs. Morel to lovers, you'll see that Lawrence was definitely drawing on Freud.See, when Lawrence published Sons and Lovers in 1913, Freud's ideas were becoming a really big deal in Europe. So we think that Freud provided Lawrence with the buzzwords and the concepts he needed to explore the then-very taboo subject of sexuality in his creative works.Freud also wrote about how sexual desire can get expressed in things that aren't obviously sexual, so Lawrence was able to follow his lead--to broach issues of sexuality in his writing indirectly, back when people were pretty hostile to anything sex-related. Just take a look at some of Lawrence's descriptions of flowers and you'll see what we mean...Guess that D.H. Lawrence character was a pretty clever guy after all, don't you think? This book is fully Annotated and illustrated. It contains all chapter's Summaries their analysis, Characters description their analysis and themes, Glossary for each chapter and Glossary for whole book on the end of the book.

Book excerpt: Meet Gertrude Morel, a vibrant and ambitious young woman who has some really great ideas. Unfortunately, in early-20th-century British society, women don't get many opportunities to discuss ideas. So, instead of talking, she goes to parties and entertains herself by trying to find out as much as she can about the other guests. You know, kind of like how we ride the bus with our sunglasses on just so we can stare at people. Anyway, one day, Gertrude comes across a man who's unlike anyone she's ever met. His name? Walter Morel.Walter is a young coal miner who loves to dance and sing without any of the inhibitions that govern Gertrude's prim and proper life. Lucky guys, those early-20th-century Brit boys. Compared to the women, at least--are we right? Anyway, it doesn't take long for Walter's zest for life to completely win Gertrude's heart. Surprise, surprise. Swoon, swoon. Big fat diamond. Next thing you know, Gertrude becomes Mrs. Morel. There's only one problem: Walter decides shortly after marrying that he doesn't want to be a teetotaler anymore, and starts drinking away all of their money. Oh yeah, and he kind of lied about ever having any money to begin with. Mrs. Morel quickly descends into a miserable life and has four children with Walter. Her first son, William, grows up to be an energetic and successful guy. Mrs. Morel is pretty up-front about the fact that she wants to use William to live out all her unfulfilled ambitions. Yikes. When William dies young, though, Mrs. Morel heaps all of these unfulfilled desires onto her next son, Paul. Then she gets really possessive of him. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. We guess. Paul is a quiet and artistic boy. As he grows up, he and his mother become inseparable. But then Paul falls in love with Miriam. Paul can't admit to this love openly, because his mom doesn't really like Miriam. She thinks Miriam is going to suck all of the energy out of Paul and make him average, when Paul should be going out and doing great things in the world. As the story continues, Paul actually starts feeling an attraction to Miriam's older, married friend, Clara Dawes. And yep, he ends up breaking things off with Miriam and getting with Clara. Kind of harsh, bro. But Paul can't commit to Clara either. There's some part of him that he's never willing to give to a woman... a woman who isn't his mother, anyway. He wants to connect with someone, but doesn't want to marry because it might interfere with his pursuit of individual greatness. This sounds like a pretty familiar narrative in some cultures--especially for men--don't you think? Sadly, Paul's mom gets sick and dies. Paul, consequently, spirals out of control, falling into a life of drinking and flirting with women he doesn't care about. During this time, Miriam asks him if they can get married, and he says no. Bad news bears abound. Paul sinks deeper and deeper into his dark hole of sadness. He thinks about committing suicide so he can be with his mother again, but instead he decides to forge ahead and try to live a good life...At the end of the novel, though, we simply don't know if he'll be able to live, or not. So we say: best of luck to you, buddy. You go on and chase your dreams.

Among early twentieth century English apprenticeship novels that preceded Lawrence's work, the main character usually undergoes an "education" or "apprenticeship" toward a meaningful life experience. As part of his (or, rarely, her) apprenticeship, the protagonist begins with innocent, often mistaken notions about the nature of reality; only after some painful experiences does he grow to mastery in the game of life. Specifically, he learns valuable lessons about himself, especially his limitations and illusions, but by the completion of his youth he often can answer three questions: What is the nature of love? What vocation is appropriate for me? What is the meaning of life?
