Book Songs of Nature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of Nature Classic Reprint written by John Burroughs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Nature In compiling this anthology of Nature poetry I have been guided entirely by my own taste in such matters; I have here gathered together such poems as I myself prefer amid the material at my disposal. This is according to the wishes of the publishers, who desired that the collection should be mine in a real sense, and thus carry with it such savor of originality as one man's preferences, may give to such a work. I trust I have not carried my personal likings too far, or to the point of, giving, expression to any mere eccentricities of taste in my selections. To make the work individual and yet of a high average of excellence has been my hope. In such matters it all comes back after all to one's likes or dislikes. One may think he is trying the poem by the standard of the best that has been done in this line while he is only trying it by his own conception of that standard. (So much of that standard as is vital in his own mind he can apply and no more.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nature Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nature Songs Classic Reprint written by David Chalmers Nimmo and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Songs In putting forth a fifth book of verse that cannot find a publisher, reader or a friend, perhaps the plain, blunt truth again is best. All the votes that really count are adverse. It can't get across. Perhaps it is not worth it. Perhaps it has performed its highest service in giving the author mental occupation at a time when most needed, but in a country and nation that has none of the first class and very little of second class poetry, it ought not to be so hard to find a publisher and more important, a person capable of judging who will even read. This is the first classified collection of my songs. They are a lyrical contribution to a subject that ought to have a large and inspiring volume. It is surprising that we have no great book of such a character. Why has no genius been born and consecrated to this subject! The scattered fragments in the singers are merely incidents and illustrations. Byron, Wordsworth and Shelley may give us an utterance here and there, but we have no great songs on the sea, the mountains, the plains, the forests, the sun, the moon and the midnight heavens. The vast panorama of the seasons goes on and yet we have no great lyrics on the passion of spring, the ripeness of summer, the magnificence of autumn and the polar virility of winter. In nature there is a fountain of infinite song that ought to be more and more delightful to men as they are being bound up in a social organism that is unkind to all the pure influences and inspirations of the first great mother. These songs are just a little contribution in that direction and an invitation to the singer, the apostle and prophet of nature to appear. A great deal more in this book than the mere poetic forms will instantly compel comparisons with the poet Shelley. It is the right place to acknowledge the relationship which is none other than that of poetic fatherhood. Book Nature Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nature Songs Classic Reprint written by Annie Johnson Flint and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Songs In The Beginning The lights of the city gleam and glow In the misty purple dusk, Bursting out of the grimy globes Like tropical fruits from the husk: A myriad sparkling orbs of light, - Violet, golden, scarlet, white, - Blazing up at the stars of night. But the light was not in the globes; Man's hand has led it there, His power, his thought, the wonder wrought, Captured and chained the flare; And the light obeys his will, The mind of man and his skill. But back of the light is the power house, Where the great wheels tireless turn, Where the pulleys lift and the gearings shift, And the roaring fires burn. And back of the power the mine, Where the toiling slaves of the Lamp Burrow like moles in the black pit-holes In the dust and the deadly damp. And back of the mine are the buried trees Where the strong winds laid them low, Charred by the fires of centuries, Smoldering deep and slow; The days of the Lord are a thousand years, The eves and the morns of the circling spheres, And a thousand thousand lingering days Passed over the trees and the hidden blaze. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earth, Sky and Air in Song His series of books is presented in the hope of aiding the youth of T our country to form the habit of observation of Nature, than which there is no greater power for education. The series consists of two volumes, Book One and Book Two. It is recommended that they be taken up in the order indicated, though each book is independent of the other. It has been my endeavor in writing the words of these songs to use the child's language, and to recognize the child's sense of humor, which seems to me of great importance. In the music I have tried to adhere naturally to the elocutionary expression of the text. It is impossible to give satisfactory directions as to the manner in which songs are to be sung; but if teachers and others who may use these books will bear in mind the above fact and allow the children to sing the words as they would read them, taking all the liberties necessary for the elocutionary expression of the text, the best results will, I am sure, be obtained.
