Dunn of the University Library with his usual care and success. They are in size and, as far as possible, in other respects, exact reproductions of the manuscripts. I am dedicating this book to Henry Bradshaw (of unforgettable memory) and Francis jenkinson, those two learned custodians of the treasures of our University Library in recent years, to whom no student, young or old, British or foreign, has ever applied without finding the most ready and generous help. They have taken the most lively interest in all research upon our Cambridge manuscripts and early printed books, notably in that upon our priceless Codex Gg. 5. 35, and have on several occasions rendered me valuable assistance in my own work upon the Cambridge Songs.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of English Songs: From the Sixteenth to the Nineteenth Century The Editor regrets that he has not been able to obtain, from the proprietors of the copyright of the Songs of the late Thomas M00re, permission to include in this volume any of the beautiful compositions of that writer but as every reader of taste and every lover of music is familiar with Moore's Melodies, it is hoped that the volume will not be on that account the less acceptable to those who desire to know the past as well as the present state of song-literature. The Editor cannot, while explaining this involuntary deficiency of the volume, omit to express his thanks to the living writers who have so cordially given him permission to make extracts from their works. He has also to return his acknowledgements to Messrs. Cramer and Beale, Regent Street; to Messrs. Goulding and d'almaine, of Soho Square; to Messrs. Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars and to Messrs. Adam and Charles Black, of Edinburgh, for the permis sion to insert the compositions of deceased authors, of which they possess the copyright; and to Mr. William Chappell, and Dr. E. F. Rimbault, for the kind communication of many in teresting facts connected with the authorship of old songs. Book Songs to Make the Dust Dance

Download or read book Songs to Make the Dust Dance written by Yung-Hee Kim and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking through the long-established image of Heian Japan (794–1185) as a culture dominated by ritualized aristocratic values, Yung-Hee Kim presents a picture of a country in transition, filled with a wide variety of common people responding to very ordinary situations. The court does not disappear, but rather becomes part of a larger society inhabited by Buddhist nuns and mountain ascetics, farmers and fishermen, beggars and gamblers. In popular songs called imayo, they express their concerns about religion, love, aging, and even current affairs. In 1179 Emperor Go-Shirakawa compiled a collection of this song genre, which had flourished for two centuries. His twenty-volume anthology, Ryojin hisho, circulated until the middle of the fourteenth century, when it disappeared completely. To the astonishment of the scholarly world, two volumes reappeared early in the twentieth century. It is these texts—a small remnant of a powerful popular literature—that Kim makes accessible to English-speaking readers. Ryojin hisho juxtaposes the sacred with the profane, the high with the low, the male with the female, the old with the new. The songs, in translations that faithfully reflect the sounds and images of the originals, make up the core of this book. They are surrounded by a wealth of material on the imayo genre, the women who sang the songs, the role of court patronage, and other aspects of Heian culture. Far from simply surviving as an aesthetic artifact, the anthology comes to life in its own literary and cultural context. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date view of nineteenth-century classical music places a strong emphasis on the history of opera and on schematic representations of musical structure and form. The book presents a highly concise survey of nineteenth-century music tailored for the increasingly limited amount of time available to readers for the study of any one period, and focuses specifically on the central repertory heard today in the concert hall and at the opera house. The volume provides an overview and background information on nineteenth-century music including the Viennese ascendancy, musical drama in the first part of the nineteenth century, the styling of the avant-garde, operatic development from mid century, the life of the concert hall after mid century, the diversity of nationalism and the new language at century's end. For musicians and music lovers interested in an introduction to classical music.
