This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the West and Other Poems Here's a murmuring in the trees, And a sighing on the breeze; There's a calling from the robins on the hill; And it fills my heart with pain And a longing - that is vain To be up and out, a-wandering at my will. There are wildflowers everywhere Shedding fragrance on the air, The butterflies are hurrying to and fro; The squirrels and the bees Are as busy as you please. Out there among the hills where I would go. F or it's there that one can rest. Lying close to Nature's breast. And the breeze's lullaby is low and sweet, 50 I turn my longing eyes Where the stately mountains rise. And the wooded hills are nestling at their feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hermit of the Saco: Story of the White Mountains The Hermit Of The Saco Introduction Why is the Minstrel mute? Is there no Theme In this fair land? Is Freedom's touch so cold, Too harsh for music, too wakeful for a dream? So lost in selfishness, and lust for gold, That the sweet Muse forgets to pluck the strings That lift the soul till with the spheres it sings? Are these bright fields that lull the eastern sea, And yonder slope, gilded by setting sun, - A rising Empire, vaster, it may be, Than ever yet the sun hath shone upon, - Not worth a poem, ringing out its praise, The story of the times, its early days? Is there no hand to gather the bright flowers That strew the pathway of its hill and glen? No bard like Scotland's, with transcendent powers, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Seasons: And Other Poems The present volume exhibits specimens of my moody but delight ful companion. She is ever to me a source of inefi'able pleasure. She is too independent to court the favors of the great, and shrinks from seeking the applause of the vulgar. Her joys are in the sanctuary of the domestic circle. My task is simply to give to the world the promptings of her inspiration. Should they be received with the smiles of favor, she may be encouraged to future exertion; but should the tribunal of the public, before which she is about to appear, doom her in justice to eternal oblivion, let her go unlamented. Whatever the decision may be, there is no danger of my pining away under a feeling of withering neglect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Verses of the Valley and the Mountains N 0 one but the poet can realize for how much these few songs stand - how exquisitely varied are the features of nature, yet how fugitive are those we most wish to chain; and how many flowers of the mind open, wither, fall and leave no sign. Yet, though these pleasing as peets are evanescent, and coy of being pictured, they ever hold their own charms, and you may see and feel them if you will but loosen the eyes and intend the mind, - not anxiously but kindly. Open your senses, and open your heart, to the sweet influences, that pulse like music through the old oaks and over the fields of wheat; that bathe the illimitable forest of evergreens like an aromatic dew, and sink to the canyons in mountain-born munifi cence; that rain from the celestial bosom of the morning, and drop like starlight from the deeps of night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Hills: Their Legends, Landscape, and Poetry The object of this volume is to direct attention to the noble landscapes that lie along the routes by which the White Mountains are now approached by tourists, - many of which are still unknown to travellers; to help per sons appreciate landscape more adequately; and to asso ciate with the principal scenes poetic passages which illus trate, either the permanent character of the views, or some peculiar aspects in which the author of the book has seen them. Where so many landscapes are described in detail, there cannot fail to be sameness and repetition. It would have been more to the author's mind to arrange the vol ume by subjects instead of by districts, and to treat the scenery under the heads of rivers, passes, ridges, peaks, &c. But it was found that such a distribution and treat ment, although it might have given the book more artis tic unity, would have made it less valuable on the whole, than to construct it as a guide to particular landscapes, and a stimulant to the enjoyment of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the West IN placing this volume of poems before the public, the author ess has been actuated more by the advice of friends than the mere love of fame, and if her songs shall be as music to one listening ear, not vainly will she have wrought through the red heat of summer days, or the white frost that lays nightly along the devious paths of every human life. As the dove went forth from the sacred ark, so her heart's bird goeth forth to the world from these pages, not knowing if it will find rest in sunny places, and beneath serene skies, but may it be to bear the branch of olive as a token, that shall bloom in perennial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain Spring: And Other Poems I wandered down a mountain road, Past flower and rock and lichen gray, Alone with nature and her God Upon a flitting summer day. The forest skirted to the edge Of Capon river, Hampshire's gem, Which, bathing many a primrose ledge, Oft sparkled like a diadem. At length a silvery spring I spied, Gurgling through moss and fern along, Waiting to bless With cooling tide All Who were gladdened by its song. Oh, Who would pass With thirsting lip And burning brow, this limpid wave? Who would not pause With joy and sip? Its crystal depths Who would not crave? This query Woke a voice Within Why slight the spring of God's great love, That fount that cleanseth from all Sin, Our purchase paid by Christ above?
