Tradition makes Jacob linger for four teen years, on his way to Mesopotamia, in the houses of study of Shem and Eber. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Zion by Hebrew Singers of Mediaeval Times The originals of the following poems are, with one or two exceptions, to be found in the Sabbath and festival prayer-books in use in the synagogues of English and foreign Jewish communities. By far the larger number come to us from mediaeval Spain, where Hebrew poetry reached the highest point of devotional and poetical excellence. There the Jewish hymnologists were alike poets and philosophers, and the stream of learning and cultivation, mingling with that of poetry, flowed through the plains of religious life and enriched them in a thousand ways, while the fruit of the tree of knowledge was used both to enlighten and strengthen religious faith, and to adorn and beautify divine service. Verse written up to the tenth century show the development of piyut, or liturgical poetry, and retell episodes from the Bible and exalt the glory of God. Medieval works introduce secular ideas in love poems, wine songs and rhymed narratives, as well as devotional verse for specific religious rituals. Themes such as the longing for the homeland run through the ages, especially in verse written after the rise of the Zionist movement, while poems of the last century marry Biblical references with the horrors of the Holocaust. Together these works create a moving portrait of a rich and varied culture through the last 3,000 years.

Book Songs of Grief and Gladness and Deborah Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of Grief and Gladness and Deborah Classic Reprint written by Ezekiel Leavitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Grief and Gladness, and Deborah The author's spirit is intensely nationalistic. He is not only an idealist, but distinctly and fervently a Hebrew idealist. Wherever his body may be, his soul dwells in Zion. Over and over again, in different forms occurs the exhortation with which he closes A Zion ist Marseillaise. The invincible passion with which the poet clings to this idea is very, well expressed in his lines, They Tell Me. The poems are profoundly mournful, as is to be expected of songs written under the shadow of the greatest tragedy of modern times - the Jewish persecutions in Russia. Many of them breathe the discouragement of an ardent spirit that started out with sanguine hopes of the speedy triumph of right and freedom throughout the world, only to become convinced by sad experience that the complete victory is still far in the future. The author is deeply imbued with the history of his race, a history so interesting and so wonderful that it is impossible for any Open-minded person to read it without feeling his heart swell with pride over the achievements of the old Jewish heroes and heroines. This feeling is of course tenfold stronger in those who share the same ancient and heroic blood. Mr. Leavitt's poetical gift attains some of its highest flights in descanting upon the old glories of Israel, as in his remarkable poem To My Nation. The poet is indefatigable in urging his people to live up to their record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Songs of a Jew Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of a Jew Classic Reprint written by P. M. Raskin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of a Jew Every ghetto is now a nest of singing-birds. But the Yiddish poet has so far made his appearance in English literature only by way of a version of Morris Rosenfeld's Songs from the Ghetto. If there is nothing in the present volume that reaches the intensity or the originality of Rosenfeld's In the Sweat Shop - that palpitating protest against mechanical drudgery which leaves Hood's Song of the Shirt as far behind as the sewing-machine leaves the needle - Mr Raskin has yet the unique distinction of expressing himself in English almost as trippingly as in Yiddish. It is only in 1910 that this "alien immigrant" published in his adopted town of Leeds - where he seems to have become a Member of the Royal Sanitary Institute (!) - a Yiddish collection entitled Ghetto-Lieder, with a preface by "Schalom Aleichem," the Yiddish Mark Twain. And now he has already mastered English sufficiently to write in the language - if not of Shakespeare - of Longfellow. There are those who, in the spirit of Dr Johnson, might wish that this feat were not only difficult but impossible.
