I do not pin hope on my weak powers. I only put my hopes on the grace of God, given to the apostles on the day of Pentecost, which made them, the unwise and unbooks, the “wise fishers” of the universe. And the fact that I, a sinner and weak, are worthy of this great apostolic grace in the days of Pentecost, fills my soul with a special high spiritual joy and hope for the all-powerful help of God. Come to me, O Good Comforter, and cleanse me from all filth, sharing me with Thy holiness, and non-evening light, and Divine lives, and the most fragrant dispensing (canon 6 to the Holy Spirit). Holy Hierarchs of God! Calling on this fiery Spirit of grace onto my sinful head, pray the Lord, that it would burn out in me all sinful impurity, that it would sanctify and enlighten me, that it would instruct me in all truth and that it would make me worthy of this great and terrible, blessed and glorious service.

Book As I Walked Out One Evening

Download or read book As I Walked Out One Evening written by W. H. Auden and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1995-08-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. H. Auden once defined light verse as the kind that is written by poets who are democratically in tune with their audience and whose language is straightforward and close to general speech. Given that definition, the 123 poems in this collection all qualify; they are as accessible as popular songs yet have the wisdom and profundity of the greatest poetry. As I Walked Out One Evening contains some of Auden's most memorable verse: "Now Through the Night's Caressing Grip," "Lullaby: Lay your Sleeping Head, My Love," "Under Which Lyre," and "Funeral Blues." Alongside them are less familiar poems, including seventeen that have never before appeared in book form. Here, among toasts, ballads, limericks, and even a foxtrot, are "Song: The Chimney Sweepers," a jaunty evocation of love, and the hilarious satire "Letter to Lord Byron." By turns lyrical, tender, sardonic, courtly, and risqué, As I Walked Out One Evening is Auden at his most irresistible and affecting.

Half of the contributors focus on the United States, from Puritan New England through the Old South to Billy Graham and Pat Robertson; the others discuss revivalism in England, Norway, China, and Canada, chronicling influential as well as less frequently studied movements. Download or read book Restoring the Faith written by Edith Waldvogel Blumhofer and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Pentecostalism began as a culturally isolated sect intent upon announcing the imminence of the world's end. The sect's early millenarian fervor gradually became muted in favor of flag-waving patriotism. At the end of the twentieth century it has become an affluent, worldwide movement thoroughly entrenched in popular culture. Edith Blumhofer uses the Assemblies of God, the largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world, as a lens through which to view the changing nature of Anglo Pentecostalism in the United States. She illustrates how the original mission to proclaim the end resulted in the development of Bible schools, the rise of the charismatic movement, and the popularity of such figures as Aimee Semple McPherson, Charles Fox Parham, and David Du Plessis. Blumhofer also examines the sect's use of radio and television and the creation of a parallel Christian culture

Book May Night or the Drowned Maiden

Download or read book May Night or the Drowned Maiden written by Nikolai Gogol and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nikolai Gogol's short story "May Night, or the Drowned Maiden," a single night ends up changing the lives of many. Young Levko is the son of the head of a Ukrainian village and madly in love with a maiden named Hanna. To Levko's dismay, his father attempts to break off the romance in secret. What follows is a night during which both the alive and dead seek vengeance. In this tale wrapped in mysterious folktale, family ties are put to the test and characters are faced with a lesson or two. The story was adapted into two operas in the late 19th century and a Soviet film in 1952. Ukrainian-born writer and dramatist Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) is considered one of the most prominent figures in Russian literature. His unconventional works are often touched by folklore or a hint of the unusual, providing the reader with surprising turns and characters. Gogol has been attached to a range of different literary styles, including Russian literary realism and even surrealism. His stories include the short story "The Nose" and the famous satirical novel Dead Souls. Gogol's works have inspired numerous stage, film and television adaptations including the movie Inspector General (1949), based loosely on his play with the same name.
