More than a hundred years ago its language died. N ow its dialect is dying. It is useless to deplore it, for it is inevitable. The Celt, in England at any rate, is doomed to be absorbed by the Saxon. To us Cornishmen, who love so passionately the county that is our own, there comes a heartache as we think of the Cornwall of our fathers lost. Book Songs and Poems of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs and Poems of the South Classic Reprint written by A. B. Meek and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs and Poems of the South The Poetry of a country should be a faithful expression of its physical and moral characteristics. The imagery, at least, should be drawn from the indigenous objects of the region, and the sentiments be such as naturally arise under the influence of its climate, its institutions, habits of life, and social condition. Verse, so fashioned and colored, is as much the genuine product and growth of a Land, as its trees or flowers. It partakes of the raciness of the soil, the purity of the atmosphere, the brilliancy of its skies, its mountain pictures, and its broad sweeps of level and undulating territory. The Scenery infuses itself into the Song; and the feelings and fancies are modulated by the circumstances amid which they had their birth. These opinions have formed the poetic Faith of the writer of the present volume. He has not attempted to sing in a mere spirit of imitativeness, or in the tropes and metaphors of foreign Art and Precedent. Gazing upon the delightful Land about him - the Land of his birth and affections - he has endeavored to depict its beauties, - to weave its illustrative objects into the tissues of his imagination, and to give utterance to the thoughts and emotions congenial to a mind impressed by such associations, and loving at once the Patriotic and the Beautiful. For this reason, the writer has felt warranted in styling the contents of the present volume, "Songs and Poems of the South." If they possess any merit, it is in their fidelity to the principles just declared. But the writer is still well aware of their deficiency, even in that respect. Book One Hundred Folk Songs From Many Countries Classic Reprint

Download or read book One Hundred Folk Songs From Many Countries Classic Reprint written by Henry Franklin Gilbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Folk-Songs From Many Countries This little book has been prepared with the desire to bring before the school boys and girls of America some Of the beautiful melodies of popular tradition. An acquaintance with the world's folk-songs educates and ennobles the musical sense, and unconsciously develops in the mind an appreciation of the elements Of musical form. In the preparation of this collection several thousand folk-songs have been examined, and much thought has been taken that the songs which are here presented shall be characteristic and truly representative Of the folk music Of the country from which they come. As the book is intended for use principally in the schools, the editor has studied to make the arrangements eminently practicable for this purpose. In harmonizing these folk melodies care has also been taken that the harmony used may not conflict with the spirit Of the original melody. The original words have been used in many cases, and where translations or adaptations have been made, it has been with the earnest desire to reproduce the spirit Of the original as faithfully as possible. In the case Of the original words having been lost, or being unsuited for a book of this nature, new words have been written, with the aim of expressing as nearly as possible the mood of the melody. Book Poems of the Love of Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems of the Love of Country Classic Reprint written by James Elgin Wetherell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of the Love of Country Old Andrew Fletcher's ballads are, of course, not ballads in the modern sense of the term, but rap ther national ballads, and particularly national songs. As such songs have a power beyond all others they naturally live a long and glorious life. Our British national anthem, written by an Obscure poet in honour of a royal birthday, a song destitute of poetic phrases or Of any of the subtle graces of poetry, has survived the vicissitudes of more than a century and a half, and bids fair to live for many ages. The star-span gled Banner was also the product of a special occa sion, and was written by one who wrote nothing else of permanent value; still, after nearly a hundred years it can excite an American audience to enthusiastic plaudits, or an American army to doughty deeds on the field of battle.
